From the Montgomery Advertiser comes a story about gigantic yellow jacket nests. By giant, I mean taking over the entire interior of a car.
The nests are thought to contain multiple queens and about 100,000 workers. So far, 16 have been sighted in Alabama.

Ants are among the most successful of living things. Their nests are well-defended fortresses, coordinated through complex communication systems involving touch and chemical signals. These strongholds are stocked with food and secure from the outside world, so they make a tempting prospect for any…
It's just been a week for metric errors. Via Media Matters comes an impressive

Often,
on this blog, I've ranted about the risks that our government, and our
corporate citizens, e.g. pharmaceutical companies, expose us to on a
daily basis.
Perhaps it would be good to put some of those risks in perspective.
That is, to compare the risks of various medications to
others…

Wow! For once my hometown gets some recognition for something other than the Ten Commandments and racism. Is it sad that this is all I have to be proud of?
Qu-oool! (gets stick to nest - )
Giant supernests of flesh eating Vespula! Blossoming across the bible belt!! Now how am I NOT supposed to take this as a sign of intelligent design?
Nice to see that the animal mascot of my workplace (U. of Rochester) is thriving. The article also quotes wasp researcher Dr. Mike Goodisman of Georgia Tech, another place of which yellow jackets are emblematic.
As far as I know, Mike and I may be the only two people to have ever ground up specimens of our own university's mascots.
I, for one, salute you for your Brockman/Simpsons reference. It's a freaking classic.
Hey, I smashed a buckeye once. Does that count?
"I say nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."
Of course, nobody ever listens to Ripley.
Holy crap! I live in Alabama (well, 2 miles from the state line) and am constantly wandering around in the woods. I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for these... my water meter reader actually called me today to tell me about a yellowjacket nest in the water meter. I sure hope it isn't too enormous!
Yet another reason not to move south...
Hey, I smashed a buckeye once. Does that count?
The seed or the butterfly?
