In the ongoing Democratic Party effort to alienate rank-and-file Democrats, along with those non-aligned voters who supported Democrats, an weasel-dick cowardanonymous White House official expressed surprised at the support for the public option (italics mine):
"I don't understand why the left of the left has decided that this is their Waterloo," said a senior White House adviser, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "We've gotten to this point where health care on the left is determined by the breadth of the public option. I don't understand how that has become the measure of whether what we achieve is health-care reform."
"It's a mystifying thing," he added. "We're forgetting why we are in this."
For supposedly such sharp politicians, they apparently don't read polls too well. From a NY Times poll:
In fact, if you look at the entire poll, the public option is the most popular thing about healthcare. Now, just because a lot of people support something doesn't mean that it's right. But you can't marginalize 66% of people as the "left of the left." That's a majority (unless we're all leftists now). Why is the White House going out of its way to simultaneously alienate a majority of people while, at the same time, angering much of its own party?
Probably because they're not half as smart as they think they are.
Fucking morons.

The numbers are irrelevant.
What is irrelevant is that their opinion is now contrary to that of the government.
The only people who disagree with the american government are communists.
Where on the old left-right political spectrum do communists fall? The left of the left.
(That is how american politics works, isn't it?)
Whoops! That second irrelevant should be a relevant instead.
The whole health care debate seems to very much be the insurance companies vs. the health of Americans. The insurance companies and their supporters have decided to make up whatever lies they can to defeat health care reform. That most of the republican party is in the pockets of the insurance industry is obvious. However, it is also true that a number of Democrats are in bed with the insurance industry.
Under these circumstances, it is very difficult to have a meaningful discussion about what sort of system would really be best for the country. I am very sad so many people want to lie and be fear mongers rather than fix a system that is not serving us well.
The left of the left drove the turnout in this election that got this anonymous guy a job in the White House. Continued support in 2012 is not automatic.
"I don't understand why the left of the left has decided that this is their Waterloo"
Yes, and we are the Duke of Wellington!
We're on our way to support but ambushes have a way of slowing our progress.
