Chemical & Engineering news has a profile of Food Network guy Alton Brown. (Did you know the Food Network is about the only family-friendly station I can ever find? True story. Ergo, I've seen Alton Brown before.) If you've not seen him, Brown's "presentation style [is] a combination of Julia…
Well, that was a cranky post. Not a good start for New Year's Day, is it? To make up for that, how about a good recipe: Cheesy Poof (From Alton Brown's I'm Just Here for More Food) Ingredients: 270 g all-purpose flour 10 g baking powder 9 g dry mustard (1.5 teaspoons) 100 g eggs (2 large eggs) 43 g…

Read about this yesterday. Apparently what they find offensive is talk of burning the (Christian) Bible.

I saw this a few days ago and... hell I can't even finish what I was going to say. It's just too damn sad, so I'll just quote the article.

Alton Verm's request to ban "Fahrenheit 451" came during the 25th annual Banned Books Week. He and Hines said the request to ban "Fahrenheit 451," a book about book burning, during Banned Books Weeks is a coincidence.

"As a public library, we are the library for everyone," Williams said. "The school library is meant to be the library for that select group at that school."

Is this not a public school?

Hmm, I guess the mention of "Denham's Dentrifice" is just too ... disturbing ... to young readers.

"It's just all kinds of filth," said Alton Verm, adding that he had not read "Fahrenheit 451."

This tells you all you need to know about ol' Alton.

I don't remember the dirty words in that book. What are they?

The fact that one of the books burned by the government in F451 is the Bible is a strong focus in this complaint. The fact that the book considers this to be a horrific thing makes the Christians' outrage at F451 terribly ironic.

Of course the fact that they want to ban a book whose entire focus is that banning books is a horrible thing trumps all irony.

Banning and burning books is just wrong.
Not surprising that the people who want to ban them don't read much,
other than the popular fiction that is the bible. And that's a pretty violent book.

That story's pretty meh. I mean, sure, the dude and his daughter are idiots.

The superintendent and librarian made some good, thoughtful, politic comments.

And we all thought you Yanks couldn't do irony.

I just posted a link to that too. He's a kookball with much too wide an audience.

If they had read it, they'd be incensed about the content, rather than a few hells and damns.
...'live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. Ask no guarantees, ask for no security, there never was such an animal. And if there were, it would be related the the great sloth which hangs upside down in a tree all day, every day, sleeping its life away. To hell with that,' he said, 'shake the tree and knock the great sloth down on his ass.' "

Yikes.

I don't know what else to say on this one.

Actually, yes, there is: I'm horrible with names. Who is Ray Mummert? ... google tells me that he's the guy who complained about being attacked by the educated part of the culture, is that correct?
