The Deep is nothing but astonishing stuff. I'm thankful I live in a time when dinosaurs and pterosaurs are more interesting than ever, when we've got the machines to bring back those beautiful pictures of otherworldly deepsea organisms and when we've started to unravel things like the deep similarities in development of organisms. It's a wonderful time to have an interest in science.

Actually, it looks unnervingly like one of the Martians from "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". How big is this thing? More importantly, does it have Heat-Rays?

Is that a crucifix on top?

Looks like a used condom with googly eyes stuck on it.

Damn, BDC beat me to it. Probably stole the margareen, too.

Is that a larval stage? Or an adult??

I'd say it looks a bit more like Mother Brain than a Metroid. I can see the Octorok though.

Beaten to it, the first thing I thought of was "Metroid".

Sven, it's an immature post larval stage. Here it is showing its trick of turning itself into a ball. Google turned up quite a few hits. I learned that it grows up to 200 mm long here:

Its eye stalks are bioluminescent, as seen glowing in the picture.

The publisher of The Deep, the University of Chicago Press, has a much more substantial gallery of photos on its website for the book.

Great googly-moogly

Been to Liberty Meadows, eh?
