Oh, no! My most subtle asset, exposed!

This is terrible. I've kept her under the radar for so long, and now this recent incident has blown her cover.

Shocking information has reached us that PZ Meyers trophy wife (paid for by the tax payers of state of Minnesota) was taking names of the movie goers to, and I quote her words, "be put first in line for the gas chambers once we overthrow the Constitution". That is correct, this state funded mistress was making a list of local Christians for eventual extermination.

All that money invested in her ninja training, wasted.

On the other hand, this nonsensical persecution style hoopla that seems to be accompanying this exceedingly stupid 'Expelled' film seems to suggest to me that they know that it's a shoddy piece of work and are rabidly trying to divert their faithful disciples' attention from it by focussing them on new and completely fabricated conspiracy theories.

Ygern, it's a joke. Landover Baptist is a notorious parody site.

RayCeeYa - I grew up in a fundy household and I can tell you that there absolutely are people out there who are that deluded. When I was a kid I actually did hear suggestions, and not only from my parents, that there were secular conspiracies in the works to eliminate the christian population. Sad but true.

But it's a lie! Your lovely trophy wife was simply seeing if anyone wanted anything from the refreshment stand before they went in to see the movie! And once Richard Dawkins started in with his usual "buttered popcorn, but have them put the butter-flavoring on the side in a little cup and be sure they get the fresh stuff from the top before they put all that salt on it" nonsense it just got too hard to remember in her head ...

Even before I clicked through to the Landover site, I knew it was a joke.

Parody hints: If it says "PZ Meyers," it's nothing you need to take seriously. It's either a joke, or self-involved idiots who can't be bothered to get their most basic facts right.

Ditto for "athiest" and "Steven Hawkins" -- both of which you see a LOT from the opposition.

Ah, good old Landover Baptist...that's effective parody of religion...they're just ridiculous enough to tip their hand and wink so you know it's fake...but damn, don't real fundies come pretty close sometimes...some milder parts of the commentary on Landover's site are an exact analog of the real thing...

Incredible! There doesn't seem to be a lower bound for their vitriol. The other comments on this site are equally vile, full of hate and racist. Landover Baptist (or Babtist, not sure how they spell it) is a parody site, of course. The trouble with this sort of parody is that it's really hard to go far enough so that it's not mistaken as real. Nearly impossible, in this case.

The problem with Landover Baptist is that it's gotten more and more difficult to parody the Christian right. I'm sure some visitors to the site take it completely seriously. God forbid (if you'll excuse the expression) that my parents ever get a link to it. They'd eat it up (except for the virulently anti-Catholic part, which they understand they have to endure so that John Hagee can help John McCain lead us into the promised land).

I have serious doubts that the site is a parody as some claim here. Look around a little. (for example the very inspiring forum rules of the pastor). And who would go through so much work to set up such a parody site, and for what audience? No, through this site like-minded people communicate (i.e. reinforce their hatred for various other groups). Granted, some people without doubt post some outrageous comments there just for the fun of it. But don't kid yourself, most of them are real.

You just can't beat atheist efficiency: Poe and Godwin in one short post!

Steven,

Poe's law can't even be relied on.

Do you want the "it's impossible to parody religious fundies" version or the version below from the 'Urban Dictionary' (sorry no link, my HTML is pathetic):

"Poe's Law" is a Christian theological principle that states: "Elements of the Gospel speak to different levels of spiritual concern in different cultures at different times." It is taught to modern evangelists as a way to better target the message of the Gospel to different audiences for maximum salvific efficacy. The law was named after theologian Dr. Harry Lee Poe, a cousin of Edgar Allan Poe, who promoted the concept in his book "The Gospel and Its Meaning: A Theology for Evangelism and Church Growth."

To those insisting that it isn't a parody, read the first post in the thread.

I'll admit, some of the later ones seem perfectly serious (which is scary, really. I mean, how messed up are things when there's a chance that a thread like that could be taken seriously because of how close it is to reality?), but it's definitely a parody.

Gee I seem to remember a list of Ten Commandments. One said something about not bearing false witness (lying). Oh but that was from the god of the Jews. Probably doesn't apply to Christians. Sorry I must have the wrong god - this religion stuff is so confusing it's hard to keep track.

Once you've made Landover Baptist, you've arrived. You can die happy. But not yet.

Every time I forget about Landoverbaptists, something happens to remind me of them! That some people can't immediately recognize the satire is kind of frightening I think.

Sadly, you're wrong. Sane, perhaps. But definitely deficient in correctness for this area.

Time to give another $10 million for absence-only sex ed! They need more public money. Wait, why not give a $500+ million contract to two conservative companies to "help with passports", and those companies can direct company donations to these wing nuts? Oh, never mind, that already happened.

Nice story.

#24:

You are right, the first one is definitely a parody (I stopped reading after the quoted part (I just had breakfast!), and up until then it could have been perfectly real, only after the quote block it becomes too much). But, as you pointed out, some of the other ones could be real (Isn't it very telling that we even have this kind of discussion? Parody is sometimes indistinguishable from real Xian diatribes, as somebody else already pointed out somewhere above.) However, that some comments on this site are parody does not mean that one can dismiss everything on this site as a joke. My guess is that a substantial fraction of it is quite real.

Now, this post really cracked me up...

(Warm wishes and all the best to the Trophy Wife, of course)...

man, I hope at least a few managed to see the thread that post came from:

"Richard Dawkins Runs Amok in Minnesota Theater"

Other reports list tens, possibly hundreds dead from Dawkins as he ran threw the theater attacking movie goers with his teeth. Hamstrung by various hate crime laws the police had to stand by helplessly as Dawkins sated his ghoulish thirst for human blood by tearing the throats out of patrons. Dawkins then looked over the writing, broken bodies of his victims, screamed "Were is your God now?" and ran off into the night.

I do hope that helps resolve for some whether Landover is a parody site or not.

LOL

I know at least one Christian who thought Landover was real when I sent him to the site. I let it run for quite awhile. It was fun.

Various rules are invoked regularly in the course of commenting here, e.g. Hume's, Poe's, Benford's, Godwin's, etc. We may need a new one: Charles' law.

I surely hope, however that your friend was a Baptist and not a mMethodist or a lLutheran or any one of those other hell-bound sects. My understanding from my friends is that Landover is set up for American Repbulican Baptists and everyone else is unwelcome.

And the lord forbid if your friend was a catholic because that churhc is considered a pagan cult setup to provide young boys to the church leadership.

Don't be so quick to dismiss LBC as a fake. I think we need to keep a sharp eye on them because, while they claim they are bound by civil law (e.g. they don't hunt and kill witches unless they are on Landover property) they are still dangerous to secularist and darwinist and we should be prepared.

Just remember that your old friend Michael Korn, who at one time was threatening biology profs for teaching evolution, really thinks that atheists should be rounded up and forcibly converted or killed.

I believe that Landover Baptist Church *itself* is a parody, but do we know for a fact that all the comments are?

damnit, now I did it.

ITS

I love Landover.

Even though I figured out loooong ago they're a parody (and I find them extremely funny), they got me. I read on their site that Will Ferrell is gay, and for 18 months, I just accepted that as the truth. So when I saw some Ferrell movies, some of the stunts weren't that funny.

Then I figured out, HEY, Will Ferrell ain't gay. So now I see some scenes in recent movies, and those scenes are even funnier now. This kissing scene in Talledega Nights; the skating scenes in Blades of Glory.

And it's even funnier when I remember: Landover got me good.

This may be one of those things where you had to be there, but I don't think so.

I read on their site that Will Ferrell is gay, and for 18 months, I just accepted that as the truth. So when I saw some Ferrell movies, some of the stunts weren't that funny.

It's great you figured out it was parody, and I have nothing to add, except to say that if a parody site like Landover can affect you that much, you might want to think about limiting your internet time.

Well, you see, the sad part is that I figured out they were satire in 5 minutes. Got the joke instantly. But the got me on the Ferrell joke.

I have no idea why.

None.

That would be "THEY got me..."

Grr.

This entire incident is still so unbelievable to me. You won, that's for sure.

Here's one problem with me staying off the internet, Ichthyic: I'm a web-programmer. I can't help it, I'm always here. It's what I do. Except when I'm riding my bike. But I have been pointing out these problems to my kids. I think this is a good lesson in integrity (as in, the lack thereof).

My 13 year-old daughter recently got a huge, long rant from one of her Christian friends. I'd love to post it somewhere. But not without permission. When I saw it, my exclamation was, "Jesus Monkey!", one of the things my daughter taught me.

The thing that gets me about LBC is all the "rationalists" who show up to argue with them. Check out the "25 Questions for Evilutionists" thread. The questions were cribbed from "Dr." Kent Hovind supposedly. Wave after wave of people showed up to reason with them. I felt so bad I thought about regestering just so I could PM them to tell them it was a parody site. I didn't want to spoil anyone's fun. So I stopped reading.

But I'm so cynical I think at least a quarter of the nonsense at UD is Tardmining. And I sincerely hope that RaptureReady and CARM have a higher percentage of trolls than UD. Otherwise.....*shudder* If you ever want to remind yourself why we are fighting, check out those two. Now that was seriously funny.

I live in Ireland, and as an atheist, I don't spend much time on purported religious forums, so perhaps I have been fooled. But I still see no evidence that Landover Baptist is a parody forum. There may well be members who do write parodies, but that is not the same thing.

Have a look at this thread http://www.landoverbaptist.net/showthread.php?t=5610

''The purpose of this site is to praise and glorify the Lord, Jesus Christ. It is a place for Christians to fellowship and worship...Perhaps you've heard that we are a joke, satire or parody, and you came to our site for a few cheap laughs ...'' It then launches into some atheist bashing ad nauseum.

I fail to see the parody.

Ygern,

Check out the video I linked to at #90 - this is from the "head pastor" of Landover, and is much more clearly parody.

This is hilarious. I would have loved to have been standing behind the Myers with a big bowl of popcorn. They are dying to be persecuted.
