A ne pas manquer: Cephalopods strike back!
My favorite part is when they 'ink' the antagonist.

Zut alors! This blog seems to have developed a following of Frenchmen. The shame of it is, I studied French for 5 years in High School and don't remember a word of it.

Is there a problem with the link, or is it just too busy? I couldn't bring it up.

It worked for me... I really enjoyed it!
A little stuttery for me, but awesome animation. I'm describing a show right now about some Greece islands that look exactly like the village shown in that cartoon.

Come on minions, the ilk want to know who is entertaining us. Thanks for taking this out of the thread and posting it, anonymous minion. :)
It's fairly large - 60 MB. Might have better luck wiht Right Click, Save Target As....
Plus it's misnamed. Should be Hexapodi (Hektapodi? Hectapodi?). Is it that hard to draw the full complement of 8 tentacles?
For those looking for info on the film, this was posted on Cartoon Brew
The French CG student film Oktapodi has been winning all sorts of awards this year including the "Best Animation" prize at the Imagina Awards 2008. It was mentioned on Cartoon Brew a few months back and now the entire short can now be viewed online at the Autodesk website. It's directed by Julien Bocabeille, FX Chanioux, Olivier Delabarre, Thierry Marchand, Quentin Marmier and Emud Mokhberi.
First I was told that Quicktime needed some program parts that weren't available from Quicktime. So I dumped Quicktime. I then discovered that if you go to the Quicktime website, they'll sell you either version 7.5 or 7.6. I had to do some hunting to discover that Apple gives a free download of 7.0. Once I had that installed I clicked on the link. I've got broadband and the cartoon has been downloading for almost 20 minutes. Looking at the bar, it's about a third of the way through.
It may be a great, prizewinning cartoon. But it's become too much hassle for me to watch.
Youtube link.
You can get many more pictures and details from the official website :

This is work from students at the french school of visual communication "Gobelins".
In english : http://www.gobelins.fr/presentation-gb.htm
You can see all their work here, this is student work from 2007:

You're welcome. Of course my knowledge of the film comes from reading the spifftastic Cartoon Brew as well, originally.
That makes me hungry for takoyaki
With Ouzo or Sake?
Gobelins is quite possibly the most impressive animation school out there right now. Thanks for the link, I just shared this around the studio. :)
I think the word you're looking for is manger.
I was able to view it quite easily, surprisingly enough, and it was delightful!
info_dump@15: The current wording translates as "Not to miss". Manger would be "not to eat" ... which I guess also works.
cheers,
Hugh
It would be nice if the minions had a standard way of identifying themselves. It seems to be different in every post.

Thanks, Hamsterpoop. (wow, that's something I never anticipated ever writing)
40% yes when I first viewed it, & now 41% yes.
When the chips are all counted, when everything's done,
When push, they say, comes to shove,
I'd wager against the return of the sun
Ere a cephalopod who's in love.
When the wagering comes to affairs of the heart
(where a cuttlefish, reader, has three)
Then a cephalopod has a boost from the start
(well, at least, it appears so to me.)
Now an octopus (mutant, with only six arms)
Fights for love--for a life lived in peace;
And a cephalopod can find magical charms
When it finds it's in love and in Greece.
Cuttlefish, you're brilliant. :-)
Tabernac!
Hugh@17: Well thank you for adding a new word to my French lexicon! I thought it was supposed to say "not to eat", but this makes more sense.
Ah, trop fantastique Danieu! L'amour des Cephalopods est une belle chose. Merci pour cette film.
Nice film, but it seems like the French here is mostly of the Babelfish variety. Vrai?
45 years since I did French in school, so . . .
I prefer my "Calmars" with a nice fresh dry crisp white wine, a Sauvignon blanc, an "Entre deux mers" for example

#27 - the French here on Pharyngula? Or on the film? The French here was perfect, "a ne pas manquer" is what the newspapers put in movie reviews. It's kind of like the typical phrases you see on reviews here - "a stunning masterpiece" and "you don't want to miss this film."
Je suis prof de francais. Too lazy to type in accent marks this early in the morning.
Qetzal @6,
Should be Hexapodi (Hektapodi? Hectapodi?). Is it that hard to draw the full complement of 8 tentacles?
It's an old animators' convention. Only God gets a full set.
#27 Danieau's french was perfect !
La revanche des calmars : The revenge of the squids
A ne pas manquer : 'Not to miss', (or 'don't miss' would probably be more frequent in English, I think ?)
Zut alors : Darn
(I prefer "Nom d'une pipe", more funny, but "Zut alors" is fine, also can do "Sacrebleu"). When we talk we just tend to say "Merde alors" or simply "Merde" (Damn or Fuck, which actually means 'shit' but isn't equivallent to the english shit) or "Putain" (which actually means whore, but is used more for Damn or Fuck), which all has become very common, but we avoid it when we're writing...
LisaJ #26 :
replace "trop" with "c'est", "Cephalopods" with "céphalopodes" and "cette" with "ce"... but it was a very nice line with the few mistakes, I like it better that way ;-)
Heather #29 : et notre précieuse cédille alors ?
Your usual french frog with a siwoti syndrome, Neg.
BTW, do not confuse "Nom d'une pipe" with "Name of a blowjob" !
Neg @31,
would Magritte have said, "Nom de ce qui n'est pas une pipe"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Treachery_of_Images
"Ceci n'est pas une pipe"
I don't think Magritte would have said "Nom de ce qui n'est pas une pipe", it kind of looses the significance of both, but it's funny enough, so why not ?
You mean, "it kind of loses".
(since you're criticizing everybody's French... :-)
negentropyeater, merci beaucoup!
Maybe one of the minions ought to put that poll Hamsterpoop pointed out in it's own subject so more people will find it.

It was 50-50 when I voted.
Not Found error at this time. :-( Not even a 404.
