Another reaction from Carl Wieland to the Global Atheist Convention

Ol' Carl, the Australian young earth creationist, got all bent out of shape at the disrespect we gave to his freak show and is appalled that atheists are having a convention in Melbourne, and so now he has come out with a video reply to the whole affair.

I've always wanted to grow up to be a Soviet armor division.

More like this

Karl Giberson offers up the usual cliches of the genre in in this essay for Salon. Those mean ol' atheists are trying to make a religion out of science, but savvy clear thinkers like him see the problems with that little project. Blah blah blah. P.Z. has already spanked Giberson in this post.…
Julia Gillard, the new Prime Minister of Australia, is unmarried…but she has a boyfriend, a partner, a…a…paramour, which brings up the horrific possibility of a leader of the country living in sin in official accommodations. Oh, lord, I'm getting the vapors just thinking about it. And now the…
I hate to break the news to him, but he's just so Johnny Snow. I've grated against ol' Wayne a few times before to mock his awful polls, and now I think he has finally snapped, babbling out incoherent mush about how atheists are just like believers, only worse…and he really doesn't like me. I don't…
I've been hearing a few complaints lately that there has been a shortage of creationist cretins around here — you all need an occasional fool to gnaw on to keep your fangs sniny and your pelts glossy, I know. Well, aren't you lucky: Carl Wieland, head of the Australian contingent of global…

"Atheism sucks :)"

I guess that could be a sideways umlaut. I never tire of this clip!

Another Downfall winnah!!

Theist claim that Hitler was an atheist in 3... 2... 1...

Wow. For me that's utterly pointless. Being German and able to understand every word it's really hard to concentrate on the retarded subtitles. This is just desperate.
Oh, and by the way: Melbourne, Australia is NOT called Frohnau and Pankow in German... ;-)

Paul J whined,

This is just desperate.

Um, what?
This is just a long-running internet meme.
Interesting that you put some kind of sense of importance behind it.

Wooooooooooooosh

Finally a believer in the bogey man in the sky has stopped saying Hilter was an Atheist and in fact he was a god fearing whack job just like the rest of them.

By https://me.yah… (not verified) on 19 Jan 2010 #permalink

I'm aware of that this nonsensical subtitling is an internet meme. All I said was that it doesn't work for me, never had, and the desperation I mentioned is in regard to the fact that it's just such a crude job.
Hey, let's do something with Hitler. Oh, and since virtually nobody understands what he says (even we Germans have a hard time understanding this lunatic when he's really agitated), we can add just any other subtitle. Don't get me wrong, I'm not in any way disinclined to making fun of Hitler, even though that's still something like a taboo here in Germany, but I'd rather see it done somewhat more intelligently. Yes, memes are rarely intelligent, but this one simply doesn't work for me.

It's an OK effort but not really up there with the best of the downfalls.

I did like the recent homeopathy one better.

I can also empathise with Paul J. because I had the same problem with Blazing Saddles. Being a sidekick and able to understand Frontier Gibberish, I found Gabby Johnson's comment at the town meeting to be insightful, well-argued and articulate and so not in the least bit funny.

By anthrosciguy (not verified) on 19 Jan 2010 #permalink

The kids comment at the end is a winner. As is the whole reverse-Godwin aspect of the clip. Bwahaha!

By https://me.yah… (not verified) on 19 Jan 2010 #permalink

I can also understand the German, so it's a little jarring...but that's the silliness of it all. It's supposed to be a ridiculous mangling of the "translation". Even if you don't understand German, everyone knows he's not really ranting about evolution or football or whatever.

Weiland is quite the whiner.

Umm, I know I'm slow on some of this inntertubes stuff (getting too old to keep up with the hottest stars and innest jokes & I haven't seen a "Hitler meme" before) but it took a while for me to realize that Carl didn't make this - someone else made it as parody on what Carl was thinking.....
I hope that helps the other old farts out there who are a little slow on the uptake; the rest of you can get back to knowing what is going on out there.

"Weiland is quite the whiner."

Seems to be the cretinist default mode, mind you that have little else to say, the whining is to fill, and be a place holder for, the slots in the conversation where the evidence, they all claim to be privvy to but never quite seems to make the light of day, is supposed to slide into!

And anyway only true xians can bleat martyrdom for their jeebus!

They are doing the traditional sniffle waltz tis all they can do!

And Geobbels had no balls at all.

"So the Creationists are the Nazis in this video, right? Why the hell would anyone portray themselves as Nazis?"

They struggle with the concept of metaphor...even when extremely apt!

Like the banana fiasco...they , or specifically 'Kumfart', claims that the banana has to have been designed to fit the hand.
Neatly missing the point that the hand might well of been designed for another purpose ;-) but by serendipity has found a banana is also a cozy fit!

In 'Kumfarts' case it might well be wisest to try and imagine what possible other appendage or article could the hand possibly have been designed to grasp manfully in the first place?

I am sure that even a male fundamentally dumb xian might get an inkling of certain possibilities in the morning.

One does hope that 'Kumfart' and the likes of Weiland of course, will one day follow their character and make a very apt discovery!

Then , and only then, might they realise why folks tend to the smirk rather then the awe when they pontificate on bananas!
And then they might well proceed directly to the premise that bananas have sod all to do with it!

At first I thought that this was a serious video.

But then after seeing the ratings (5 stars as of now), I got a bit skeptical and watched it.

Good thing it's really just another take on the Downfall meme.

I'm surprised this meme has lasted so long. And I think it's a testament to Bruno Ganz's performance that it's still impressive, even after you've watched him ranting about everything from the Xbox 360 to Michael Jackson.

I am aware of all internet traditions.

Carl Wieland had the offer from me and Rorschach to debate, why is he so afraid to debate us?!?

It is good to know that YEC-Christians think of Hitler as one of them.
I will now fight even harder against Yec/ID.

Because with you two he can't appear to be facing down the mighty evil atheist professor from the US. You are just a couple of mates from down the road, and you would kill the typical creobot script. Which proves it is nothing but PR for him, He might actually have to think on his feet, which probably causes him to quake with fear.

By Nerd of Redhead, OM (not verified) on 19 Jan 2010 #permalink

Perhaps some, but obviously not all, German speakers have a more complex set of buttons that are pushed by this clip, (memories of relatives recollections of the era, and so forth) and that kind of messes up the joke.

"A lack of sense of humour" might just be that the joke may be triggering a different set of responses.

Yes, that was moderately amusing. Amusing enough to send to a creationist friend of mine anyway!

So the Creationists are the Nazis in this video, right? Why the hell would anyone portray themselves as Nazis?

Lots of people with Aspergers posting here.

Just because PZ says it's from Carl Wieland doesn't mean it actually is. And if the dialogue from the movie is distracting, turn off the sound (and if you're an accomplished German lip reader, focus on the subtitles and not the lips). Sheesh.

Here's the one I posted in the endless thread the other day :

Hitler learns Leno is moving back to late night

As to Wieland, still an obscure figure on the sidelines over here, despite his yelling and screaming, noone cares.

Surprised about the number of humour-impaired in this thread !

Admittedly I thought that PZ was being literal (ain't an Aspie but headed that way) until I actually watched the clip.

Are those who speak German seriously unable to read the subtitles without distraction from the German? As noted, there is a 'mute' button.

Even still, is it really so hard? I can be having a one-to-one conversation in my native English and I can still tune out the other speaker without any difficulty. In fact, the hard part is not tuning them out when they get boring or if I see something shiny. In fact, halfway through the second paragraph of this comment I tuned myself out and started thinking of Homer Simpson singing "Nacho, Nacho Man".

This was funny when it was a rant about football because it was just so incongruous. Re-done as a creationist rant it's just feeble. There are so many good arguments against creationism and ID but if we resort to name calling and blowing raspberries it ends up looking like we don't have any confidence in them.

Before coming to this site this morning I was looking for book reviews of a Mike Majerus book and ended up on an ID web-site "Uncommon Descent". Most of the comments that followed a post on Majerus' work on Peppered Moth fell into two categories: a) Majerus looked like a scientist/geek/dweeb and hence must be wrong and b) evolutionary scientists are mentally ill! That's the standard of debate on the other side; lets not descend to their level.

Two points

1. When you've pounded your head against the wall for years if not decades showing the idiocy of ID and creationism sometimes a little big of mockery and taunting is necessary.

2. You just NOW found Uncommon Descent?

While we may engage in mockery along the lines of point a) and poignant insult like point b), we also have the most important point c), which is the point where we can add to the mockery and insults with actual evidence to back up our claims. Points a) and b) from the ID side would be far easier to take if they had anything resembling point c).

if we resort to name calling and blowing raspberries it ends up looking like we don't have any confidence in them.

And this is not true at all... again, as I pointed out above, it's not the use of mockery and insults that degrades credibility, it's the lack of substance for the asserted claims.

If all the evidence actually pointed to ID the way it does to evolution, and we evolutionists stubbornly refused to acknowledge that evidence, ultimately we'd deserve the mocking and derision, and sitting here complaining about how mean the other side is would not serve to make our claims any more right. It would just make us look stupid and whiny.

As Rev. pointed out above, it's the complete and utter willful ignorance and intentional deception from the ID side that has forced us to resort to pointing and laughing. We first try to educate. If they will not accept the mountains of clear evidence and consciously choose to remain ignorant, the mocking is well deserved.

idealist @ 53,

There are so many good arguments against creationism and ID but if we resort to name calling and blowing raspberries it ends up looking like we don't have any confidence in them.

This ignores the fact that creationists are not interested in and incapable of having a truthful discussion about anything.Spend a few years on Pharyngula or talking to the creeps in real life or on other blogs, and you will soon realise that the last thing those clowns want is an exchange of actual arguments that are based on any sort of scientific research.
Which leaves rational folks who believe in science and evidence no choice other then to resort to mock and ridicule.
