The final exam for my class is today (9-11 am), so I'm a little preoccupied. After giving the test, I have to grade it, but then, I get a whole week of "vacation." The scare quotes are because of the multitude of things that need doing-- I have to prep two classes for next term, start assembling material for my tenure review, and do a bunch of work in the lab. It's not going to be restful.
As a result, you get lazy blogging today. Here are some links that have caught my eye:
- First, on the science front, Dennis Overbye takes on quantum mysticism. I haven't seen What the #$!%* Do We Know?, but based on the descriptions, he says all the right things.
- A couple of notes from inside ScienceBlogs: Dr. Free-Ride on how the academic system is broken, and Alex Palazzo on attempts to fix it, plus Dave Munger on peer review (there's a whole ArXiv rant that goes with that last one, but we'll skip it for now). On the lighter side, RPM points to the Greatest Scientist Cage Match.
- Did you know that The Planetary Society has a weblog? I didn't until I found out from James Nicoll.
- The Fat Bald Guy Rule is worth keeping in mind.
- Deek Lowe has some thoughts on gender issues in science that are worth reading.
- And finally, I linked this yesterday, but here it is again: the classic Sesame Street aliens. Just because you need some silliness every now and then.
And now, I need to go give a test...

I do not know why, in December, the Free-Ride offspring turn their attention to questions of evidence and testimony. (I do worry, however, that by this time next year the elder Free-Ride offspring may become a 12-25 truther.) This week, the sprogs considered ways to establish dates that don't…
The Free-Ride family got its copy of the new CD/DVD set Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants this week. The sprogs, who have been listening and watching, offer something kind of like a review.
The first thing to note is that, on the DVD, you have a choice of going through the whole set of…
Unlike some of my dear readers, the elder Free-Ride offspring, upon reading yesterday's post, immediately recognized it as an April Fool's Day joke. (This recognition was accompanied by only the barest hint of a smile. A mother's fine, dry wit is, apparently, an acquired taste.)
Although that…
This school year, the elder Free-Ride offspring has a classroom teacher who used to be one of the elementary school's science teachers. (Owing to budget cuts, both the science teachers have "retreated" to be general purpose classroom teachers, and all the classroom teachers have to teach their own…
