How Do You Put That On Your CV?

Via a comment by Anton Sherwood: Have you ever seen an episode of Star Trek with a particularly bad bit of technobabble, and said to yourself "You know, I'd be willing to fact-check their scripts for a few hundred bucks..."

Well, Dave Krieger did just that, and it wasn't all it's cracked up to be. I'm going to be charitable, and assume he wasn't there for the episode where a planet's temperature is reported as "-290 Celsius" (or seventeen degrees below absolute zero...).

It beats what I used to do for extra money in grad school, though. I used to proctor the MCAT's, among other standardized tests. It paid $175 for about eight hours of a Saturday, and you got to spend that time in a room full of pre-meds on the verge of a nervous breakdown...

Over at Neurotopia, the Evil Monkey is offering advice on how to earn extra money in graduate school: The key to more than mere culinary survival in graduate school is to volunteer for research studies. I took part in more projects than I could count. Some don't pay squat. I once spent 2 hours a…

NBC's science and health correspondent, Robert Bazell, has an opinion piece today on MSNBC: Stop whining about intelligent design. Scientists should stop whining about threats to the teaching of evolution and spend more time discussing values. I should note here that most of the piece is strongly…
If it's zero degrees outside and it becomes twice as cold it was before, what is the temperature? Usually it's presented as a joke. I'd like to consider some alternative interpretations. 1) It could literally mean the number denoting temperature divided by two. This has a number of unfortunate…

Ha! Spike just aired the Krieger Wave episode last week. TiVo grabbed it and I deleted it unwatched because I remembered how dismal the acting in it was.

I hated the obviously bad science as much as the next geek, of course, but it was the internal inconsistencies on ST:TNG always bothered me the most. Probably the one that bothers me more than any other is the idiotic line in the Series Finale where Future Riker declares "Take us out of here, Warp 14." Or some other similar idiocy. This is the series finale, and you can't get the Maximum Warp limit right? Ugh.
