Big Victory

The college basketball season started off well last night, with Maryland defeating Hampton in the first game of the "Coaches v. Cancer Classic" pre-season tournament. Or possibly the "2K Sports College Hoops Classic"-- I've heard both, and don't really care.

"Big deal," you say, "it's another meaningless game where a big school beats up hapless competition."

The thing is, they had previously barely squeaked past Easterbrook favorite California of Pennsylvania, in an effort to make Jeremy Gold's head explode. So, it's actually nice to see them soundly beat a team that they ought to soundly beat.

The game wasn't on tv, but post-game reports make it sound like the new guys played well, which is good to hear. They get to face Vermont tonight, which may or may not be more of a test, but also won't be on tv.

Oh, yeah, and there was some sort of election yesterday, that has some people doing the Happy Dance.

Syracuse beat Providence yesterday, in a good old-fashioned Big East game-- on a critical late-game play, a Providence player got smacked across the face hard enough to turn his head, and no foul was called. He missed the shot, Syracuse got the rebound, and it was all over but the free-throw…
Light blogging today, because yesterday was a Hoops Day here in Chateau Steelypips. A goog hoops day, too, with victories in all three games that mattered: Syracuse edged St. John's, Maryland beat the hated Dukies, and the intramural team I'm playing on won a tough game last night to more or less…
Thursday night's shellacking of St. John's seemed to be mostly about the ineptitude of the Red Storm, rather than an indicator of greatness for the Terps. I fully expected them to come out and lose to Michigan State, who beat a ranked Texas team in their half of the semifinal bracket. Much to my…
The college basketball season is officially underway, and as is typical of the early season, there are already some wacky results, the most shocking being Kansas losing to Oral Roberts Wednesday night. Nobody is happier to see that score than Boston College coach Al Saunders-- losing to Vermont is…
