Accentuate the Positive: Week of Science

Today is the official beginning of the week of Just Science. The many blogs who signed up have pledged to post only about science for the week, and particularly not to post about "anti-science"-- no "religious people are stupid," no "alternative medicine is crap," no "global warming denialists are a bunch of cranks."

I didn't sign up for three reasons: one, that I'm lazy and didn't get around to it; two, that I don't want to give up posting about academia and pop culture for the week; and three, that it would be sort of redundant, since I don't really do much "anti-science" posting in the first place. The interested reader is welcome to guess which of those is more important. I generally support their goal of highlighting the interesting and exciting work done in the real world of science rather than constantly banging on the negative elements of ignorance in our society, though, so I'll try to avoid suffering the sort of head trauma that would be likely to make me do a "religious people are stupid" post.

And if you visit the Just Science page, you'll find lots of links to people with more dedication to the cause (or just more organizational skills) than I have... Go read their stuff, and celebrate the good parts of science for a week.

Last week, I expressed my surprise and dismay that the Atheist Alliance International chose Bill Maher for the Richard Dawkins Award. I was dismayed because Maher has championed pseudoscience, including dangerous antivaccine nonsense, germ theory denialism complete with repeating myths about Louis…
There's something about the prefix "anti" that provokes all too many people, even some who consider themselves "skeptics," to clutch at their pearls and feel faint. Antivaccine? Oh, no, you can't say that! They're not "antivaccine"? Who could be so nutty as to be "antivaccine"? Even members of the…
At the recent Republican debate, three out of ten Republican candidates stated that they did not believe in evolution. This reflects a larger ignorance of science. I have a very simple idea to combat the Stoopid for bloggers who don't think of themselves as 'science' bloggers: Once per week, link…
