As paid sick leave policies gain momentum across the country, a new study finds that such policies do indeed improve worker morale and have little overall effect on employer profitability.
It seems obvious that workers with paid sick leave are more likely to stay home and seek out medical care when they or a family member is ill. But it’s always good to confirm a hunch with some solid data.
Most of us probably expressed some appreciation yesterday for our mothers. Despite the brunches, flower sales, and media attention lavished on moms each Mother's Day, though, US policy doesn't express as much appreciation for mothers (or fathers) as it should.
My flight to Texas tomorrow leaves ungodly early, requiring me to leave for the airport around 6:30 or so. That's earlier than I like to be up, but it's a bit late by my father's standards-- he always books flights that leave at 7am or thereabouts. This seems like a good topic for a poll:

Here's something I'm interested to know, and would greatly appreciate responses, either here or via email. It may have been blogged about somewhere, but I haven't come across it in the blogosphere.

To any experimentalists: What made you want to become an experimentalist? When did you first 'know'? Was it something you read? Was it an experiment you did? Was it something else?

To any theorists: Same question - what made you want to become a theorist? Something you read? Does theory just appeal to you more? Something else?

If it takes a chicken and a half a day and a half to lay an egg and a half how long does it take a grasshopper with a wooden leg to kick all the seeds out of a dill pickle?

What...is your name?

What is the weirdest thing you written on a test? What the weirdest thing you seen on a test?

I just finished a lab midterm that involved a lot of waiting, where the TA encouraged us to draw pictures of dinosaurs and such. And I delivers. I hope she reads xkcd and watches the Colbert Report, else I going to do some explaining.

A friend of my father, a math professor, once grade a test marked on every page with "please turn page" & ended with "see you next year".

This is more of a comment than a question....

Will anyone watch the History's Channel program on Star Trek tonight?
