Who were those masked men?

16681845_600857643441127_5155605245120935009_n Or, as John Abraham puts it in the Graun, Just who are these 300 'scientists' telling Trump to burn the climate? It appears that long-term union man Lindzen has been organising again, buoyed perhaps by the prospect of some kind of reward from the Trump admistration. It seems rather notable to me, however, that none of those who might have hoped for some baubles to be tossed their way have got anything; but it's still early.

This has shades of the 2007 official nutter's list. That was "100 prominent scientists"many of whom were neither prominent nor scientists. This bumps the number up to 300, and prominent has been promoted to "eminent". But - yes, you guessed, it wasn't hard - it is really just the usual suspects padded out with a variety of non-entities. Well, read JA in the Graun if you like.

So, who is "Serge Wasterlain"? No other identifying marks are provided. Who is "Claes Sundin"? Could he be the well-known author of "Luftwaffe Fighter Aircraft in Profile ". Lyndon E. Taylor at least has a PhD, but no other identifying marks. Do not confuse Nelson, Brand with Nelson, Darren. Soon, Willie is there as well as Morner. Lubos is there, as former Harvard; in 2007 he was former Harvard but at Prague; Prague has now vanished. Odd. But not interesting. Humlum is there, Idso, Happer, Gerlach, Dyson. More nordics that I might expect. Who *isn't* there? Spencer, Christie, Michaels. Morgenstern is there but alas not Rosencratz.

As to the pic: I nicked that off someone and don't know the original source. Do tell if you know.

[Update: Bollox! I forgot to include a link to the actual petition text and link and now (as JA points out) it is incredibly hard to find it. I think the link is https://cloudup.com/iHcBpTDmCNu, but it is currently broken for me (the entire site is broken). It was in some shitty hard-to-copy format so I didn't; there's an archive of it at http://archive.is/z2kDz but it doesn't archive properly.]

One of the miscreants on the list is a former chemistry prof of mine. Oh horrors. How embarrassing. If I remember correctly, he had worked for one of the petroleum giants before becoming a professor. Cripes, I am ancient, he must be even older. Well, good. That somewhat limits the time that he will have on Earth to be able to do evil going forward. I suppose now that I will have to take the time to see if I can find some errors in his stupid anti-climatology writings with which to attack the son of a bitch. This could be fun!

"John McLean, PhD candidate James Cook University" is on the list - he's a computer repairman who first signed one of these petitions about 15 years ago, as "John McLean, PhD" and got busted for the fake qualification.

Also, since when was "Christopher Monckton" an "eminent scientist"? He's on the list too....

[Oops, did I diss Monkers by not mentioning him? -W]

Didn't they used to be able to find enough kooks and nutters to make their list 1,000-names long?

By Craig Thomas (not verified) on 27 Feb 2017 #permalink

Craig Thomas @ #7 --- I don't think they can count that high.

Not only did you not mention Monkers, you all missed it hilariously misspelled his name as "Mockton"

[The Good Lord tends to be particular about things like that; one can only suppose that a low-grade minion was sent to to the signing instead -W]

Note how that message linked to in #9 urges people to sign but doesn't actually contain the petition or any link to it.

I have strong memory that first time I managed to locate the text itself it ended with a passage that the text could change, and this *after* people had signed it. Unfortunately I can't find that particular page again.

Morgenstern is there but alas not Rosencratz.

Morgenstern is the alleged author of The Princess Bride. Guildenstern is Rosencrantz's partner. </pedant>

It should be pointed out, again, that Abraham is not in any way, shape or form a climate scientist.

[Why should it be pointed out? Are you suggesting that his name might be on the list? -W]

Spencer is there, at least in the version referenced at BH.

But then, and speaking of Nordics, so is:

RØMCKE, Nils Håkon: (Swedish emailer who wished to sign the petition);

Max comedy value there: I think everyone should now email Dick and ask to be Spartacus.

According to your link, Willis was asked to sign but declined. Too much of a "lightening rod" apparently.

Oh, John Abraham.
Somehow I was expecting a JA to be a bicycle-riding climate scientist.

He implies it was Lindzen, by saying that he wrote to Lindzen to wish him well with his petition. Of course, this doesn't mean that it was Lindzen

"Who *isn't* there?"

Curry, Tol and Salby

But Spencer *is* there - at least in the link you give in the Update in the OP.

Fred Singer's bio is hilariously truncated

Click on that lovely picture and do an image search with TinEye.

It finds upwards of 40 other appearances. I did not try to disambiguate that result.

Actually, JA has published relevant peer-reviewed articles in climate science, including coauthoring with serious folks. See list of pubs.

At least 115 were on Happer's letter last year to Lamar Smith, but this list is even lower quality. The aforementioned MOCKTON entry was especially amusing.
