The pile on my coffee table

One of the unexpected pleasures of blogging here at ScienceBlogs is that publishers send us books, hoping that we might offer some publicity. The problem with this is, for me at least, once the semester starts, I have little opportunity to read books that are not at least partially related to my teaching or research interests. So, in the interests to quid pro quo, here are a few of the books I recently received but I have as yet not had a chance to read or complete.

Like many of my SciBlings, I received a copy of Christine Nusslein-Volhard's Coming to Life [amaz], a book I liked very much, but as yet haven't gotten round to writing anything about. You could do worse that check what Jason, Shelley, Bora, RPM, and PZ have to say about that book.

Forthekids forwards a meme. I think I did this once upon a time, but it stays interesting. Grab the nearest book. Check. The Revenge of Gaia: Earth's Climate Crisis and the Fate of Humanity by James Lovelock, J. E. Lovelock Go to page 123. Check. Write down the 6th through 8th sentences: Today it…

We like free stuff, here at Chateau Steelypips, and we like books, so that's a Good Thing. It's becoming almost too much of a Good Thing, though-- In the past…
Through some quirk of the publishing industry, I find myself with two free copies of Lee Smolin's The Trouble With Physics, one from my Corporate Masters at Seed, and the other direct from the publisher. This seems a little excessive, even for a confirmed bibliophile like myself. (I know, I know,…

I'm guessing that's the reason. Either that or the steamer has yet to round the Cape :)
