gun ownership

A U.S. soldier opened fire on fellow troops at a counseling center inside a U.S. base Monday, killing five before being taken into custody, the U.S. command and Pentagon officials said. ... The shooting occurred at Camp Liberty, a sprawling U.S. base on the western edge of Baghdad near the city's international airport and adjacent to another facility where President Barack Obama visited last month. A brief U.S. statement said the soldier "suspected of being involved with the shooting" was in custody but gave no further details. Nobody else was hurt, the military said. It was unclear what…
One of the arguments in favor of unrestricted ownership of firearms in the united states is that the 2nd Ammendment guarantees gun ownership as an inalienable right for all Americans. It doesn't of course. Depending on which version of the Contitution you look in, it says this: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. or A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. What it really means is…
Once again, cheap, only barely regulated and readily available firearms take a number of lives in yet another mass shooting. In Graham Washington, a man killed his children and himself. He had a reason, though it was a demented reason. And he had the inclination, though it was a misguided one. And he had a gun. Had he had the first two and not the third, there is a pretty good chance this would not have happened. The man who fatally shot his five children and killed himself had just discovered his wife was leaving him for another man, authorities said Sunday. The bodies of James…
You have probably heard about the shooting in Pittsburgh. The details are still sketchy, but word on the street is that the shooter, who killed three cops, was upset about a law placing some restrictions on gun ownership. He was also upset about secret government activities that "they are not telling us about." Do what extent does Gun Nut = Paranoid Maniac who should not be trusted near firearms? UPDATE: Police chief Nate Harper says the motive for Saturday's shooting isn't clear. Friends say the gunman recently had been upset about losing his job and that he feared the Obama administration…
Don't overlook the awful news from Germany, in which a taunted and bullied crazy person killed 15 people and self. He started out in his old High School where he gunned down 9 people, so quickly that many of the dead were students found with their head on the desk and their pencils still in their hands. He took off, initiating a huge manhunt, hijacked a car, killed a bunch more people, had a shootout with the police, ran away and finally killed himself. The weapon was a handgun from his father's gun collection. Since the Germans have stricter gun ownership rules than the Americans, and…
This is uncut video of an interview with a dad and son (of slightly older age) who were at the show. I just want to note, as a former "Massachusetts Liberal" ... that yes, this is Massachusetts liberals at our best. When a child blows his own head off with an Uzi, our first instinct is not to run for cover and defend lax gun ownership and careless playing with firearms at all costs. Our first reaction is to be alarmed and concerned. Deal. Here they are taking the almost dead boy away: A day at the gun show:
Quentin Patrick thought his home was being robbed. So he fired 29 bullets from an automatic rifle out his front door of his house hitting 12 year old T.J. Darrisaw, T.J.'s 9-year-old brother, Ahmadre Darrisaw, and their father, Freddie Grinnell. T.J. was killed. All automatic assault rifles should be banned for ownership by private citizens in the United States. That is obvious and has always been obvious, and only the nuttiest of the gun nuts could possibly think otherwise. This particular incident does not change that, though I fully expect people to use this as an argument in favor of…
New questions have been raised about US gun laws after a boy aged eight shot himself in the head with a submachine gun at a Massachusetts weapons fair. The kid, Christopher Bizilj, was playing with an Uzi at the Westfield Sportsmen's Club, blastng pumpkins. A gun instructor and his father were present. The father's statement: ""This is a horrible event, a horrible travesty, and I really don't know why it happened." Ah, Mr. Gun-Nut Moron, it is obvious why this happened. Because your gun-loving attitude, which we presume you passed on to your child, made it happen. Why just the other day…
A vocational college student in Finland, named Matti Juhani Saari, has murdered nine people at the college he attends in Kauhajoki. He nearly botched his own suicide but is not dead in hospital. He was a licensed gun owner, who recently posted video of himself firing his gun on the internet. Police actually looked at him but decided they could nto revoke his permit. Ooops. Details.
A tiny Texas school district will allow teachers and staff members to carry concealed firearms to protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting employees follow certain requirements. The small community of Harrold in north Texas is a 30-minute drive from the Wilbarger County Sheriff's Office, leaving students and teachers without protection, said David Thweatt, superintendent of the Harrold Independent School District. The lone campus of the 110-student district sits near a heavily traveled highway, which could make it a target, he argued. "When the federal government started…
Jim Adkisson entered the Unitarian Church for a children's play earlier today, carrying a guitar case. But instead of taking out a guitar and singing Kumbaya, he pulled out a shotgun, killed two adults, and wounded seven others before being overpowered. This was in Knoxville Tennessee. Jim Adkisson, 58, of Powell, Tennessee, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, Kenner said Sunday evening. Adkisson is not believed to have been a member of the Knoxville church, and investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen told reporters.…
I woke up to an icky world this morning. After painfully clearing my lungs and scarfing down some medication, I scanned the TV channels for news. and the blogosphere for inspiration. The TV was giving me mainly god, while the blogosphere was giving me measles, pandemics, murdered sea lions, and this poor eagle with its beak snapped off. TV land was still in it's pre-day stage (which runs an hour later here in the Midwest). Therefore, fully half or more of the stations were busy peddling Christianity. I learned that it was easier to accept faith and know that God has a plan than to…
An investigation is underway into how a gun carried by a US Airways pilot was discharged during a flight. No-one was hurt when the gun went off as the plane was preparing to land at Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday. A hole in a cockpit wall apparently caused by the shot is visible in photos obtained by AP news agency. Under a programme implemented after the 9/11 attacks, US airline pilots are allowed to carry guns on domestic flights following a training course. ... The gun discharged just before noon on Saturday aboard Flight 1536 from Denver to Charlotte, as the Airbus A319 plane was…
In 1998, 13 year old Mitchell Johnson and his 11 year old buddy Andrew Golden gunned down four students aged 11 and 12 and English Teacher Shannon Wright, and wounded 10 other people, at Jonesboro Westside Middle School. They had pulled the fire alarm to bring their victims into this trap. Johnson was released from prison at the age of 21, and his record was adjudicated, thus restoring his right to own firearms. Two days ago, a federal jury convicted Johnson, now 23, of a weapons charge in connection with his possession of a 9 mm hand gun and a shotgun. I think it is time for a change. […
