I was just going to leave my plug for the Skeptics' Circle this week stand as my only post today--until I became aware of some serious lunacy: MUMBAI (AFP) - A Catholic group called on Christians to starve themselves to death in protest at the release of "The Da Vinci Code" at cinemas in India as others burned copies of the novel. The Catholic Secular Forum said it hoped thousand of people would attend a protest Wednesday in Mumbai to burn effigies of Dan Brown, the author of the best-selling novel. "It's to show the extent that our feelings have been hurt," said the group's general secretary…
He's actually finally going to release the original, unaltered, un-"improved" trilogy on DVD: Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy. In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the…
According to CNN, Revenge of the Nerds is being remade. I have only one question: Why? It's not like the first movie was a great masterwork or anything. Even so, it was fairly amusing (and now hopelessly dated) as an example of fantasy fulfillment for geeks everywhere, but that's about it. It's also noteworthy because it was Anthony Edwards' first starring role (and he had hair back then) and because James Cromwell played Louis Skolnick's father, with John Goodman playing the football coach. The question produced by this remake, though, would be: What are the differences between the nerds of…
According to Trek Today: Paramount Pictures announced today that Lost creator J.J. Abrams will co-write, produce and direct the eleventh Star Trek film, set for release in 2008. According to an article in the Daily Variety, the new film will be a prequel to the original Star Trek series, featuring younger versions of characters like James T. Kirk and Spock. The movie will chronicle events such as their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission into outer space. The as-yet untitled new film will be written by Abrams together with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Abrams is the…
Perhaps the most eagerly anticipated film of the summer is Snakes on a Plane, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Very little is known about the plot of this movie, other than that it will involve--well--snakes on a plane and Samuel L. Jackson. Here's a trailer: Too bad it's unoffical. I almost wish it were the real trailer. Actually, the real trailer is almost as good, and can be found here. It looks hysterical. I might have to check this movie out. It looks like a hoot.
You can't make stuff like this up. You really can't. Did you know that Tom and Jerry are in reality a clever secret nefarious plot by the Jews? That's what Professor Hassan Bolkhari, who teaches philosophy of art at Tabatabaei and Al-Zahra Universities in Iran and is a member of the Film Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran and a cultural advisor to the Iranian Education Ministry, asserts (if you understand the language, feel free to check out the original video here): There is a cartoon that children like. They like it very much, and so do adults - Tom and Jerry. [...] Some say that this…
