I am still catching up with myself and all my commitments -- amazing how these things happen when you work for free, isn't it? Below the fold is the list of what I've been working on, and the progress I've made;
putting the finishing touches on my OpenLab2008 essay and emailing that to the editor. Yes, I am terribly late! Done! And OpenLab is going to press at this very moment.
writing six book reviews. Yes, I am terribly behind on this too, unfortunately!
writing three guest blog essays, also late. One is finished…

Despite the fact that I am experiencing my typical "post-conference blues", I have managed to remain productive, although this is a minute-by-minute battle. (Hanging out with all my cool and fun peeps reminds me of how lonely and socially isolated I truly am). For example, do you remember the big pile o' tasks that I told you I was working on? Well, it appears I am making progress!

Now that the world is brand new again, thanks to President Obama being safely ensconced in the White House, I am curious to know what you all are thinking and doing right now.
To get you started, I thought I'd tell you what I am up to. Now that I am back from North Carolina (my session was apparently a success), my NYC visitors are all safely back home again, the ScienceBlogs' MT upgrade is completed and I am mostly finished with transferring the proper files to my new laptop so I can continue doing my work on my blog, and I finally have some time…
For some reason, the holidays turns many people's thoughts to the contemplation of food. So, as requested elsewhere, here's an open thread to share recipes, salivate over great meals, or just chat about what's on the stove right now.
It's been a long day for me, and now I get to cap it off with another presidential debate. This could be awful. I'm just hoping that McCain is feeling desperate and will do something that's bug-eyed crazy to change the status of the election. Go ahead, say what you think in the comments.
McCain brought up the "overhead projector" again! He really is an anti-science loon.
After claiming that Obama was running a negative campaign, McCain than tried to defend the ugly attempt to tar Obama by association with Ayers. Hypocrite alert!
My final opinion: McCain didn't blow up as I hoped, making it…
We have another debate coming up shortly, so here's an open thread for you all to chatter on…if the software lets you.
There will be no drinking games allowed that encourage alcohol consumption every time POW is mentioned.
<sigh> If ever I hear the words "my friends" again, I shall gag.
Defining moment for me was when McCain insisted that Obama was dangerous because he would speak too loudly (while later castigating him for advocating diplomacy), and Obama came back to point out that McCain was the one singing "bomb bomb bomb, bomb Iran". In other words, McCain was a desperate fraud…
All the fun is over now, and it's time for me to get on I94 and drive back across Wisconsin and Minnesota, and to get back to work. At least you can read about the excellent party, which was excellent, and share in one of the pleasant memories. You'll have to wait to hear about last night's AHA-sponsored talk, which was well-attended by an enthusiastic audience, and which was taped by both Karl Mogel and 3D Science News (the scene where I suddenly jump forward through the screen and bite the head off a creationist in the audience will be spectacular, I'm sure).
Since this is going to be a…
I'm heading out the door, off for a long drive to the airport and a slightly shorter flight to Denver, so I'll leave you with an open thread. Go ahead, fill it up, I can always make more.
If you haven't ever commented here, this open thread is a good opportunity to enter the millionth comment contest:
Plus, one lucky reader will win an all-out science adventure -- a trip for two to New York City and exclusive science adventures only ScienceBlogs could give you access to.

OK, I see people are talking about it anyway in other threads, so here you go: say what you think of Palin's speech at the RNC. I caught a few minutes of it, and found it unbearable…so I won't be contributing. When I heard her declare that Obama doesn't want to find new energy sources and wanted to surrender in Iraq when we were on the verge of winning, I gave up.
Hey, there's some cool stuff out there:
A new one! Carnival of Evolution #1
I and the Bird #82
Humanist Symposium #24
Carnival of the Liberals #72
The Skeptics' Circle
And of course, if there's anything else you want to talk about, this is the thread to do it in.
Okay, as promised, here is my weekly Open Thread where I celebrate you, my readers, by chatting about anything that's on your minds. For example, is there a current event that you wish would receive more news coverage? Is there a particular feature you'd like this blog to have? Have you read a book or watched a movie you want to recommend to us? Do you have a question that you wish to ask? Did you recently do something that, as a kid, you swore you'd never do? Did you just meet the love of your life? Did you go jogging at midnight with your underwear on your head? Are you a lurker who has…
MAJeff with your morning weather.
My dad took this picture and sent it to me last weekend. It's a cold water air funnel. I thought it was cool, so I'm sharing it
When I first saw the picture, my reaction was, "OH, NO!" A couple summers ago, my dad's business was hit by a tornado. As he tells it, the sirens went off, so he and everyone in the building went to the central storage room because it had no windows (no basement in this building). The building starts to rumble and shake, as it tends to do when you take a direct hit from a tornado. After a bit, things start to calm down, and folks…
