"The atoms come into my brain, dance a dance, and then go out - there are always new atoms, but always doing the same dance, remembering what the dance was yesterday." -Richard Feynman Here you are, a human being, a grand Universe of atoms that have organized themselves into simple monomers, assembled together into giant macromolecules, which in turn comprise the organelles that make up your cells. And here you are, a collection of around 75 trillion specialized cells, organized in such a way as to make up you. Image credit: J. Roche at Ohio University. But at your core, you are still just…
"The colors of a rainbow so pretty in the sky. Are also on the faces of people going by." -Louis Armstrong It's no secret that white light is the light that we see when all the colors shine together and are seen at once. This has been known for over 400 years, when Isaac Newton demonstrated that white light could be broken up into all the known colors by dispersing it through a prism. Image credit: Adam Hart-Davis. All that we're doing is breaking white light -- in this case, sunlight -- up into all of its component colors. This can be done artificially (such as by configuring a prism) or…
I don't remember learning about plasma when I took physics, but it's amazing stuff. Last week at the Hi-Tec conference in Arizona, I got to learn how an electromagnetic field can be used to push plasma around a tube. Community college students get to play with the coolest toys! Here's some plasma contained in a small area. Figure 1. Plasma on the table. Here's some plasma getting pushed around a tube. Figure 2. Plasma getting pushed around. Wikipedia has a very nice article on plasma and plasma displays that occur in nature, such as St. Elmo's fire.  I guess if you want hands-on…
No, really, I can hang with the big boys! Although this is usually something we hear from people who are seemingly out of their league, due to diminutive stature, here on Earth: (Muggsy Bogues is awesome.) Apparently, there are stars out there that have the same Napoleon Complex. According to this Press Release, a star only 1% as bright as the Sun just released a burst of energy as powerful as 1000 solar flares! Now, that link is only too happy to provide you with an artist's rendition of what happened: But let's compare this with real stuff, instead. Our Sun has a magnetic field that's…
