AG race too close to call, Kline questions separation of church and state

In a debate between incumbent Phill Kline and challenger Paul Morrison this exchange stands out:

"I have never, and never will, view a church as a political machine for me," Morrison said.

Kline responded by inviting the audience to come hear him speak Saturday at a Topeka church.

"The separation, so called, of church and state refers to government not imposing a religion," Kline said.

This is accurate, but the "so called" is an unfortunate little qualifier to attach. Given the way that various Republican officials like to trivialize the fundamental protections of the 1st amendment, I have a hard time reading that charitably.

Apparently, Kansans in general are feeling uncharitable toward Kline. His puritanical invasions of medical records and a history of partisan hackery make him the only incumbent in a recent poll who is on the rocks with voters.

While incumbent Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius is up 58% to 38% against Jim Barnett, and incumbent Republicans are also in the 60% range against their challengers for Secretary of State, Treasurer and Insurance Commissioner, Kline is tied with Morrison, 51% to 48%. Over 61% of Independents favor Morrison, Democrats are committed to Morrison (89% support) and Kline is not as strong among Republicans (only 78% support). This will be a squeaker, but Kline is looking very weak.

SUSA found that 35% of Republicans were ready to vote for Sebelius's re-election.

While Presidential gamesmanship is all the rage, with even Kansas trying to move its primaries earlier to get a bite of that apple, major moves are under way lower down on the ballot. SurveyUSA finds the governor favored 55% to 42%, and Paul Morrison is up 56% to 43%. That's among likely voters. Incumbents are ahead in other statewide races. The governor's numbers have held relatively steady, but this represents a major shift for Morrison. Republican support for the incumbent…
The predictions Sebelius 57% (based on SUSA polling) Morrison 54% (below SUSA's last poll, negative ad campaigns will make people think twice) Moore 60% (Chuck who?) Boyda 51% (This race will go down to the wire) Weiss 53% (McDonald did well in the primary, add in Democratic votes and Weiss wins)…
With mere weeks before the elections, Governor Sebelius is sitting pretty. SurveyUSA released its poll of approval for all 50 governors, and Sebelius is the 14th most popular. For what it's worth, the allegedly resurgent Aaahnahld is the 38th. Republican approval of Governor Sebelius seems to…

I was surprised that the Eagle's poll showed considerable Kline support in Wichita (59% to 39%). Morrison needs to start working this part of the state. Western Kansas may be a lost cause but Wichita is a place where he needs to drum up more support.
