Notes from Washington Days

Bill Clinton is a great orator, and unquestionably one of the great minds of our age. A full report will be up tomorrow.

Well-placed sources had not even heard the rumors about Steve Boyda running for Senate, and sources that had heard the rumors were generally dismissive of them. People are either keeping their cards close to their chest, or Steve Kraske got burned. For what it's worth, I think there are a number of people who would be great competition for Pat Roberts, and it's nice to see the threat of a challenge reminding Pat Roberts to come back to Kansas now and then.

I interviewed Congressman Moore. I would have tried to sit down with Congresswoman Boyda, but she is with a Congressional delegation to Iraq. She arrived Friday morning, and will undoubtedly have some interesting stories to tell upon her return.

Congressman Moore seems to be enjoying himself in the new Congress. There was a spring in his step as we talked, and he seemed especially excited about being in the leadership of the Blue Dogs. On Iraq, he argued that the military mission has been accomplished for some time, and it's time for a political solution. He seems pretty confident in General Petraeus, while expressing hope that the General will push the President for a shift from the military effort to a political one.

TfK friend Don Weiss was having a great time, and looks forward to the April 3 JCCC elections. Alas, it sounds like John Doll, who ran against Jerry Moran last time, will probably not run again.

I never had terribly high hopes for the Iraq Study Group. It smacked too much of Papa Bush trying to put little Georgie on the right path, not like a serious effort to come to grips with the catastrophe that Iraq has become (and which, I hasten to note, I and others predicted it would become).…
From the Congressional Record: Mr. REYES. Mr. Speaker, it is now my pleasure to yield 5 minutes to a valued member of the Armed Services Committee, the gentlewoman from Kansas (Mrs. Boyda). Mrs. BOYDA of Kansas. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to discuss the most critical issue this Congress, indeed our…
I haven't written much about Jim Slattery's race to replace Memory Pills Roberts. Not because it isn't an interesting race, just because I haven't had much to say. Slattery knows Kansas and is experienced at winning elections there, Roberts has done a crappy job, and I hope Slattery wins. For…
From MyDD's list of 40 House Longshots: KS-2 Ryun Ex-miler Jim was held to 56%, three points behind Bush in this district. Kansas Republicans are splintering with prominent moderates fleeing to the Democrats. Kathleen Sebellius is a strong favorite to repeat as Governor and GOP anti-evolution…

Hey! I was so pleased to see a blogger wandering around the Ramada, covering the Washington Days event!

I have to say, though Clinton's speech was awesome and well worth the ticket price, Mark Parkinson's speech at the luncheon on Saturday was by far the best speech of the weekend.

People may question his decision to change parties, but I think he is a real asset to the party!

Bill Clintons' problem is that he has allowed the little head to run the big head.

I'm waiting to see the picture of you and Bill. I hear he did a great job at K-State, especially fielding a three-part question from a Ft. Riley soldier.
