The Comment Policy

I knew the time would eventually come that I'd have to institute a comment policy.

Here it is. A copy can also be found on the CONTACT page.

The Comment Policy:

I don't like to moderate my comments so don't make me. I have better things to do.
This blog is not a democracy; it's a benevolent dictatorship. If I want to delete
a comment, I shall do so, and may do so without explanation. If I edit a comment, I will
always make this abundantly clear.

Use common sense and common courtesy. Unless specified as an "open comment thread," I prefer that comments are kept focused and on-topic. Please keep the language clean. If they can say it on primetime TV, you can say it here. If not, please find a different word. Children often use this blog when doing internet research.

Act like a jerk and I'll just ban you.

I have nothing to do with the recent kerfuffle about civility and comment policies that has been meandering through science blogs, but a large quantity of posts on the subject on a largeish number of blogs has, I admit, gotten me thinking about my own comment policies. Since I often get queries,…

So I've been offline a lot the last few weeks - as you know we had 10 kids in our house for a couple of days the week before Thanksgiving, and I was out of town until yesterday. While a few posts have gone up, I've spent absolutely no time on anything other than absolute necessities online. So…
This is my site, and one of the facilities I provide is a signal to noise ratio. You want unmoderated discussion? Go and drown in usenet, which I abandoned years ago. In other words, I reserve the right to trim or delete junk [*]. Naturally, since they are your words, you will not see them as junk…

Woo-hoo! You are a finalist for 3 quarks daily. Not for the post I nominated you for, but still - I'm rooting for ya! Sorry that was off-topic, but I don't have time to go back to the relative post, and you weren't flooded with comments on this post. But this could be a little bit relative to this one, because I refrained from using colorful language!
