Renowned publication Scientific American is returning to the Festival as a key Media Sponsor, ready to wow students, teachers and the public with a wide assortment of activities based on content from the magazine as well as other divisions of its parent company, Macmillan Science & Education.
Under the theme, ¨Helping Curious Minds Achieve Great Things," Scientific American's exhibit is set to inspire visitors across a broad spectrum, from K-12 learners and teachers to college students to the general science enthusiast. The activities are designed to inspire a lifelong journey of curiosity and science discovery.
"We're proud and excited to be returning to the Festival as a Media Sponsor," says Michael Voss, the publication's Vice President and Associate Publisher of Marketing and Business Development. "Communicating the power of science is at the root of what we do at Scientific American," he adds. "Whether it's the latest discoveries in quantum mechanics or new insights into Alzheimer's and the brain, our mission is to bring the wonder and relevance of science to a broader audience, and that includes the young people who will form the next generation of scientists, journalists, policy-makers, business leaders and citizens."
That sentiment is echoed by Mariette DiChristina, Editor in Chief and Senior VP of Scientific American, who says, "In 1845, our publication's founder Rufus Porter said of the new Scientific American, 'As a family newspaper, it will convey more useful intelligence to children and young people than five times its cost in school instruction.'" She adds: "Inspiring lifelong learners is in our DNA, and we are thrilled to be part of the USA Science & Engineering Festival again this year."
At the Festival Expo, Scientific American will be well represented via a number of activities throughout the weekend. Visitors will definitely want to catch such interactive programming as:
Citizen Science: With noted scientists Jason Osborne and Aaron Alford – co-founders of the Paleo Quest program – kids will get the opportunity to discover new species of ancient fossil sharks and rays, using high-powered Zeiss microscopes and fossil-bearing material from the SharkFinder program.
If kids make a discovery, they get the credit!
Bring Science Home: This presentation features hands-on activities from Scientific American's popular website feature which inspires parents and their six- to 12-year-old kids to try out basic science principles using ordinary household items.
Frontiers for Young Minds: Another science initiative from Macmillan Science & Education (Scientific American's parent company), Frontiers for Young Minds will feature a live "scientific review workshop" in which students aged 8-15 will get to review and edit a real scientific paper for publication. (What a great item for a college application!)
Bedford Freeman Worth High School Textbooks: In an exhibit especially for classroom teachers, groundbreaking textbooks will be showcased. The presentation includes live ¨walk-throughs¨ of the Chemistry and Psychology textbooks, plus demonstrations, tips, and suggestions for classroom use.
Macmillan New Ventures: Built by educators from the ground up, Sapling's dynamic science programs drive student success through a full interactive curriculum of instruction, practice, assessments, and reporting for high school Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Visitors will be able try the program at the exhibit space.
Scientific American Editor-in-Chief to Serve as Leader of "Getting the Science Right" Panel: Proving that Scientific American's commitment to science education starts at the top, Mariette DiChristina, Editor-in-Chief, will serve as emcee on the main stage all day Saturday. Don't miss the panel she'll be moderating: "Getting the Science Right in Hollywood" featuring the science advisors of such popular TV shows as Breaking Bad, House MD, and the Big Bang Theory. Audience members will get the opportunity to participate in live polls during the discussion through a sampling of Macmillan New Ventures' i>clicker technology.
