...whereby the Catholic church may be more accepting of condom use (and discussion thereof) than some American "sex education" classes.

More like this

In Texas, local school districts are in the process of choosing which textbooks to use in their health and sex ed classes. They can choose from 4 books approved by the state board of education, a highly politicized group that is largely controlled by the religious right. Here's their latest genius…
Another study finds that abstinence-only sex ed is a failure. Not that it will matter, proponents of such fantasy solutions will just close their eyes and pray harder. The Catholic Church has to operate in parts of the world where the dark-ages ignorance regarding prophylactics is wide-spread enough to really have some 'reality based' impact; the ongoing congnitive dissonance in this country allows people to spew invective about prophylactics, without having to really match their behavior up with their thinking, or deal with the consequences of that. However, given enough time to mis-inform students, we will once again have a sufficiently ignorant population and our own resurgence of the attending negative consequences to be reminded by reality why listening to the fundies really isn't a good idea. They do promise a better world - unfortunately, sometimes people really have to have strong negative feedback to make the connections.
