hmmmmmm As opposed to what though?

Not really caring about the possibility of the bird flu virus, mutating in to a Pandemic Flu virus, for the rest of the year?

I am amazed that we need to designate a period of seven special days, when we can all collectively meditate on the potential pandemic.

I suppose this does provide "meaningful" occupation, for a period of time, for all the good folks at the WHO and other such Quangos!

Not at all, and certainly you're aware that Revere and I (and the other good people behind the Awareness week) write about flu regularly. This just serves to highlight the potential of pandemic influenza to those who might not be so aware of it; to bring it to the forefront of infectious disease issues for a few days.
