Good Grief, Charlie Schumer

I like Chuck Schumer. He's a good New Yorker, with a good New York wit, and that - coupled with the fact that he's often right - makes him one of my favorite politicians to watch. Usually, he manages to come up with a pretty good line, but every now and then he winds up way off. Today seems to be one of those times. He's quoted as saying, regarding Iraq:

"This war in Iraq has veered out of control and a great leader would recognize this and change course," said Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat.

For crying out loud, Chuck, it's not like you need the leadership abilities of a Churchill to figure this one out. Figuring out that the current policy needs isn't working requires the wisdom and insight of a stoned chihuahua; making the connection between "this isn't working" and "if I don't come up with a new idea to fix it soon, kids are gonna be learning how dumb I was for the next 150 years" requires the cognitive function and leadership skills of a mildly concussed kitten.

I'm just about done with the TB incident. I've said what I had to say (here, here, here and here) about the incident itself and TB on a plane in general. The one thing left is the significance for pandemic flu prevention. I don't think there is any significance for pandemic prevention because at…
Maybe it sounded good at the editorial meeting: Have Christopher Hitchens, supposedly funny, clearly chauvinistic, write about Why Women Aren't Funny. And so we gots, in a recent issue of Vanity Fair, Hitchens -- who seems ever more a boorish drunk rather than a quick-witted friend of the vine; an…
I'm tired of hearing people with usually progressive views (like Mark Shields or John Kerry) complain the latest MoveOn ad in the New York Times asking if General Petraeus has Betrayed Us is counter-productive, "alienating those who would otherwise agree with us." It's the same bogus argument we…
The Conneticut primary is tomorrow, and it's starting to look like Joe Lieberman will need some sort of last second miracle if he is to run as a Democrat for re-election to the U.S. Senate. Recent polls have him trailing Ned Lamont by over ten points. A nearly constant stream of major Democratic…

Tragically, the Democrats have misframed the issue: it's not that Iraq has failed the US, rather it's that no country, victim to a soul (and often bodily) killing course of 10 years of sanctions followed by 4.25 yrs of war and occupation will fight in the puppet army of the occupier or pass laws to make the theft of its oil permanent.

Finally, the debate should be about the intention to go directly to impeachment of Bush and his boss Cheney unless they immediately enforce rather than continue to trash the Constitution.
