For anyone who does not yet have a copy of Claire Nouvian's beautiful book, The Deep, here's a chance to win it - through Oceana's Freakiest Fish of 2008 contest. The book also has the Dumbo octopus in it. Is the Dumbo octopus' cuteness the perfect antithesis of the fanfin's hideousness? Would they annihilate each other if they collided? Discuss!

I snapped up a copy of it post haste after I saw the show. So pleasant. For cute, those little flashing shrimp? Those were the gentlemen for me!

I have the book but I didn't notice before that Dumbo has galoshes on his feet.

Jessica, I think that second critter recently ended up in someone's salad.

I checked The Deep out from the Hannibal library last summer. Just stunning photography!

The sea-devils are Lovecraftian nightmare creatures, but I admit that as an inlander I'm a bit biased...
