Unroll that virtual scroll!

A very cool addition to the NLM "Turning the Pages" virtual library, which I blogged about back in December: the Edwin Smith surgical papyrus. You literally click and drag to unroll the papyrus, and then toggle the annotations on or off. While it doesn't have the pretty pictures that some of their other virtual manuscripts do (like Robert Hooke's Micrographia), it's pretty cool to unroll the world's oldest surviving surgical text, written in Egyptian script circa the 17th century BC.

(Alas, while my first instinct was "This would look so cool on the iPad," the website's in flash. Boo.)

Popular legend tells us that during the process of mummification, the ancient Egyptians removed the vital organs, including the brain, and placed some of them in jars. The earliest known mummies date to around 3300 BC in Egypt. During the removal of the brain, the bone behind the nose (the…
The National Library of Medicine's "Turning the Pages" gallery lets you turn the virtual pages of classic science/medicine manuscripts. Check out Hieronymus Brunschwig's Liber de Arte Distillandi de Compositis (1512): Note that the NLM's copy is hand-colored; uncolored copies also exist, such as…
In my former life, long before I had even heard of Seed, I studied 17th century English literature and dipped occasionally into history of science. One of my favorite figures in 17th century science was mad, bad Margaret Cavendish, the Duchess of Newcastle, who lived from 1623-1673. Cavendish…
It's the week between Christmas and New Years, and, oddly enough, I'm feeling exceptionally lazy. For one thing, it's a slow "news" time; nothing much is happening to blog about, at least nothing that's motivated me to rouse myself from my declining food-induced coma to lay down some not-so-…

iPads don't have Flash????

(What the fuck is the dealio with this wackaloon fuck-up "Dead Atheists" dude polluting ScienceBlogs comments sections with his pathetic inanity? How sad and empty does your life have to be to spend your time doing shit like that? I wonder what horrible wrongness has occurred in this poor fuck's life to lead to this?)

The lack of flash on iPhones and iPads has been a bone of contention for a while, but many sites are using html5 which is okay on them. I'll leave it to the techies to debate the pros and cons of that though!

I usually go through and weed out these spastic, psycho comments, but what the hell, I'll leave that one so people can see the sort of thing I routinely get even though I don't even blog about atheism. Simply being at Sb is enough to get targeted by freaks. (Once, the wingnut likely behind this comment actually sent me a hateful email on Christmas, while I was celebrating with my family.)
