Mac RIP

Wah.

My poor li'l ol' laptop has a 15 degree bend in it.
Right between the battery slot and the DVD drive.

We were setting up for a talk, of course, and to connect the speakers I moved the laptop case over to a different table, but the Euro/US connector bit on the power supply got tangled in the strap and pulled the laptop off the table. Landed on the battery corner. Quite spectacular.

Still works, amazingly, obviously. But I don't give the hard disk long and strongly suspect the DVD is toast (I'll have to find a sacrificial disk to try it). Also fear that if I pop the battery out it will never go back in.

Lesson: the LISA sound files for gravitational radiation inspiral are cool, but maybe not quite worth that (thanks btw - I cited you and gave the URL (gmunu.mit.edu if you must know)); and,
get the new Mac with the clever magnetic disconnect on the power supply.

Guess I'll be finding out what the new Mac Pro is like, bit earlier than planned.
At least it happened after Nov 1st, eh? Could have been quite exciting (that is when the first round of recommendation letters is due for astronomy postdocs... a lot of them are "drop dead" deadlines, no excuse for late letters, automatic deconsideration).

Ooh, dear, its making funny noises now. Might just be a bent cooling fan blade.

Oh dear ...

I'll have some new sounds posted after the NRC review madness is complete (currently spending most of my time preparing an overview talk for the panel). I think you'll like them (though not at the level of sacrificing another laptop).

When I saw the disconnect advertised, I actually thought to myself "cute, but really how often does that kind of disaster actually happen?"
