Keep watching NASA

Two not unrelated pieces on NASAwatch

1) Implication of Congressional elections for NASA

Short version: more oversight of Vision for Space Exploration; may tighten wall again around science;
I'd expect Glenn Research Center to be saved; Marshall and JSC not so favoured any more; GSFC could be big winner.

2) The Ares launcher being developed to launch the new Crewed Capsule is reputedly in trouble.
Underpowered... Easy fix is to stick a couple of solid rocket boosters on the side.
Ooops. Where have we heard that one before...

PS: Mars Global Surveyor is apparently in trouble. It is old, done well, still be a shame to lose it.

NASA 2011 budget is out, and with it the new 5 year plan. It is drastic, bit more so than I expected. Short version: Constellation is dead, Dead, DEAD! Ares I, Ares V and Orion are shut down. ~ $10 billion thrown away, again, with nothing to show for it, again. More money, I'll backfill the…
Last November, in Florida, I had the opportunity to see my first Space Shuttle launch. For the hundreds of millions of people who don't pay more than a passing notice to the fact that human beings still go into space on a regular basis, this is a fairly banal thing. But to those who camp out all…
In case you missed it, the Ares 1-X launch this morning was successful. Ares is the new NASA expendable launcher, developed under the Constellation program, designed too provide medium and heavy (Ares V) lift after Shuttle and to provide man-rated launchers for future maneuverable crewed capsule…
Forty years ago two human beings traveled a quarter million miles in a tiny metal capsule and stepped out onto the surface of the Moon. It was the most dramatic footfall in the history of our species, I am in absolute awe of all the Apollo program accomplished. Though it's a long shot, I'm…

Having blogged from the AIAA conference (it was in the Bay Area 2 weeks before the HEAD meeting) I am very interested in all this. Lockmart is obviously trying to sell a man-rated Atlas V as an alternative to "The Stick" Ares I. The Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS) is starting to sound like a horse designed by committee.
