Sometimes I get asked to do some demos for kids. I like this, it is fun. This week, I was asked to do just such a demo. Kind of as a historical record, I am going to document what I did. The audience It is always important to think about who you are talking to. Is this a group of high school…
If you're not a theoretical physicist yourself, you might think that physics is physics -- we ask questions about the Universe, do experiments/make observations, and get the answers -- and math is just a tool that we use to help us get there. Image credit: © 2015 Shaper Helix — II Demo, via http…
We're having a birthday party for SteelyKid tomorrow, so I have a ton of stuff to do today. I may have something more substantive later, but for the moment, here are a couple of videos to enjoy. First, from the Minute Physics set of videos at YouTube, an explanation of why you have quantum physics…
Last week's post on how sound affects perception of visual events was the most popular post ever on Cognitive Daily, with over 15,000 visits. This was thanks to links from both Fark's technology page and digg.com. Yet commenters on both sites expressed disappointment with the demo. I wasn't…

I built one of these a couple of months ago. It is a hit with just about everyone I show it to. I made mine with 2 1/4 PVC pipe, fireproofed with aluminum duct sealing tape. I can run it for several minutes before it seems to soften past the point I am comfortable with. I plan on making one out of steel exhaust tubing and making it a permanent part of my living room decoration.

Robert Keolian over at PSU/ARL has one of those in his lab ... they had it hooked up to music too as a demo for school kids.

Could someone explain the connection between the Rubens' Tube and complex waveforms or or heterotic tubes?

it is the title that springs to mind after thinking about gravitational radiation waveform analysis from LISA detection of EMRIs, while reading Smolin's latest, and running a YouTube video in the background
