entertaining superbowl '07

First time in at least 5 years I am not on a plane or babysitting during the superbowl, and it is a decent game.

Sorry to say, Mr Smith, that it looks like Good Manning and Bad Grossman showed up.

Half-time show was one of the best in a long time, the mimic'd "wardrobe malfunction" by the dancers on Prince, the shadow theatre, the working in of Jimi's stuff ("All along the watchtower" a la Hendrix, brilliant and subversive) and the final "Purple Rain" was sublimely overblown yet appropriate.

Ads kinda sucked though.

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief"

Believe it or not, the FCC is receiving a fair number of complaints over the Superbowl halftime show featuring His Purpleness, particularly the part where he did a bit of a phallic thing with his guitar (as if generations of rockers haven't done the whole guitar as wank-off thing since at least…
Just finished watching the Brazil/Croatia game. Certainly the first half was the best half of football in the competition so far - topped with a nice goal by Kaka. Second half wasn't as good - though still better than the France/Switzerland game - the Brazilians looked a little tired. Fair dues to…
I watched the game at a Super Bowl party hosted by some of our senior majors, because Kate didn't want to see it. Of course, the guys who hosted the party didn't have cable, so we were watching the game through a haze of static and swirly lines that made the weather look even worse than it was.…
At dinner the other night, Kate mentioned this podcast, which excerpts a bit of a Jon Brion interview from 2006 where he makes a distinction between "songs" and "performance pieces." As an example of the latter, he uses Led Zeppelin, saying that their recordings, as great as they are, are about…

Amazingly, I watched none of the halftime show and very few of the ads. Yes, just for once, I mainly tuned in for the football game!

And just one question ... Are you implying that there's a good Rex Grossman who could have showed up? 20-28 for 165 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT--that's actually a pretty decent game for him, I really doubt they could have been hoping for more. It's beats the hell out of his game versus the Saints from two weeks ago. I swear, Da Bears could well be back in this game next year, and maybe even on the other side of the final score, if they can just find a halfway decent QB. Their current team really has no other weaknesses.

You were, indeed, right all along. It did go about as I thought it would. Either the Bears' defense and special teams were going to win it despite their offense, or they were just going to be doing their best to hold back the inevitable flood. At least the defense kept them somewhat in it. I tip my hat to the Colts, but also to Devon Hester.

Sorry. They were in it for most of the game, but Grossman tried to force it at the end when they'd have been better off taking short route passes and runs, and playing fourth downs.
Next year maybe...

Actually, those final minutes puzzled me. Why were they moving the ball up the middle instead of trying to stop the clock? It looked like Rex was thinking more about beating the traffic than a last minute comeback.
