KITP: in which the organisers try to finish us off...

last week of the globs workshop, so the pace is stepped up, with two talks this afternoon

Michele on dynamical evolution (video and podcast)

32k runs, parametric over initial conditions
evolved mass function, primordial binaries, tidal field, variable initial concentration, IMBH presence

Glenn on dynamical Schwarzschild modeling (video and podcast)

Schwarzschild orbit models
First intro to state of the art for fitting galaxy models
using Sauron integral field spectroscopy plus photometry
and get h3 and h4 of course (gaussian weighted skew and kurtosis for you heathens)
Nice models

then apply to globulars (tricky... orbits are collisional! no integrals of motion...)

but... there is always ω Cen to the risky
long central relaxation time and amazing data - 10,000 proper motions from plates
and 4,000 high precision radial velocities - with few hundred star overlap between data sets

so do full solution for ω Cen distribution function
hmm... they have a rotating disk at around the core radius, about 4% by mass
Hmmmmmmm
good thing t_rel is long eh

and then I had to leave... must see end of Glenn's talk on video or get his slides.

Very important point!
&omgea; Cen has now a very well measure M/L and it is 2.5 +/- 0.1 or so
right where it should be!
Hm.

new week, new topic - actually we'll be doing a lot of extragalactic globulars and the mass function of the clusters, but we start with Guido summarizing what we know about the stellar mass function within the clusters - including mass segregation and differential mass loss. Wheee. Sometime…
it is still raining?! so we have an east coaster telling us about actual data on x-ray binaries in clusters, globular clusters in other galaxies... there is an open-to-the-program-members blog over on the cluster09 wikispace. It has some good summary of yesterdays in depth discussion on runaway…
intense and dense afternoon as we get the current state of the art about neutron star natal kicks, theory and observational constraints Chevy supernova! Vicky - on NS-NS constraints (video and podcast) need >~ 2.1-2.3 solar mass He cores to get to iron and classic type II SNe stable mass…
how big is a globular cluster? There are many ways to measure the size of a globular cluster, both observationally and theoretically. This causes some confusion, especially when theorists try to talk to observers, or vica versa. rc - the core radius there are at least three definitions of this: 1…
