What words and images cannot express

I'd like to offer my sympathies to the students at Virginia Tech, and the friends and family of the victims of yesterday's horrible tragedy. I usually write long blog posts, or at least include interesting images in my posts, but today, neither words nor images really seem adequate or appropriate. Even worse, I had planned to post a series of "random distractions" this week, since the semester is pulling to a close, and those in academia need a little break. No distraction, however, can ease the mind at a time like this.

Eight years ago, I lived near Columbine High School. My husband worked right across the lake. When tragedy struck there, I was in a state of shock, but went downtown, as I'd planned, to see a Rockies game. The game, however, had naturally been canceled. I realized no one, players or fans, would be able to focus. Instead, a million questions ran through our heads, but mostly, why? Here, eight years later, we still don't have an answer. Sadly, we may never have certain explanations for yesterday's shootings, either. We'll have to move on, even if we can never forget what happened.

Tommorow Thursday, I'll start posting those random distractions, even if some will seem to carry a darker tone than before. For now, I'd like to leave a space of "silence" to mourn those who died yesterday at Virginia Tech, and as a tribute to others who lost their lives in school shootings in the past.

We may not understand, but we shall never forget.

Today at least 31 people were killed by gunfire at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, in senseless violence. Early reports suggest that the perpetrator was a boyfriend of a Virginia Tech student who was "looking for his girlfriend." But whatever the proximal cause of this tragedy, the larger question…
Earlier today I wrote a post about optical illusions. I was hoping it would distract me from thinking about the Virginia Tech shootings. It didn't. I began to see connections between the illusions and the tragedy: That sinking feeling that somebody was being shot, that spiral like a gun sight. The…
In response to the horrific school shooting in Virginia Tech, a commenter in this post left a link to a fascinating story from the latter part of 2006. Its a Boing Boing article, which quotes Loren Coleman, entitled School shootings: malignant, contagious social meme? and its really worth a read in…
I've done my fair share of ranting about Scientology, be it about Tom Cruise's aggressive and arrogant antipsychiatry nuttiness a couple of years ago or the very recent piece I wrote about the disturbing and idiotically conceived anti-psychiatry museum run by the Church of Scientology. The Church…

Hey, I wanted to say I enjoyed your most recent JIG review, you brought a very nice critical lense to casual game cloning.

I graduated from tech in December, early, so I could go into business producing a casual game. If I was more of a slacker, I'd be down there, probably getting ready to go home for a handful days. I may have even had class with the shooter, who was a fellow English major (one out of like 516, this is a school with +26,000 students) and a Senior. I kinda wish I got to peer review his writing.
