A great website called howtoons produces cartoon how-to guides to build a variety of thing to teach children, and adults, basics of engineering and science. My favorite is the Soda Bottle Submarine. When I am back ashore I plan on building a whole fleet and taking over the world.

That is very cool. The propeller "design" is fascinating, but I don't think super efficient. But the whole idea... you could teach a pretty good physics course just using this thing. Neutral Buoyancy, why you need the ruler - angular momentum, tilting the ruler to get lift (up or down), amount of energy in the rubber band to move the thing... You could even do quality control statistics by building 6 or 7 and comparing...
