The Joys of the Wall Street Journal, Weekend Edition

Ah, the joys of reading the relatively new weekend edition of the Journal...There's always news you can really use. For instance, if you happen to be in Atlanta and are hungry, the Journal will tell you exactly where you should sitting at Rathbun's, depending on whether you are an A, an A+, or A++.

And when you're done analyzing your status based on where the restaurant seats you, you can read about how to deal with your pesky, environmentally-conscience children! Ellen Gamerman reports:

In households across the country, kids are going after their parents for environmental offenses, from using plastic cups to serving non-grass-fed beef at the dinner table. Many of these kids are getting more explicit messages about becoming eco-warriors at school and from popular books and movies.

And of course, there is a book you can read to push back:

Earlier this month, a book called "The Sky's Not Falling! Why It's OK to Chill About Global Warming" hit the shelves. Its author, Holly Fretwell, says she sees it as an answer to what she calls "one-sided" environmental messages kids are getting in school and from books. "While riding a bike saves energy and is a great exercise, it gives you less time to do other things, like sports or homework," she writes. "We drive our car because it gets us to work and play faster."

My favorite: the sidebar on "HOW TO MANAGE YOUR ACTIVIST KID:"

Your daughter wants you to get a Prius but you don't want to spend an extra $3,000.

Brian Day, executive director of the North American Association for Environmental Education, a professional nonprofit group based in Washington, says it helps to tell children that there's more than one way to cut down on carbon emissions. He recommends driving less, and reminding kids about carpools.

It seems to be the time of the year for this sort of thing. Yes, I realize that the Harry Potter novels have come under attack from various fundamentalist Christians, who view them as somehow indoctrinating children into witchcraft, Wicca, demon worship, or whatever. I also realize that I may be a…
Back when I was in grad school, and paper copies of journals were delivered to the lab by a happy mailman riding a brontosaurus, I used to play a little game when the new copy of Physical Review Letters arrived: I would flip through the papers in the high energy and nuclear physics sections, and…
Happy Earth Day, everyone! In honor of the day, here's a modified re-post of piece I wrote recently for LAist. Figure 1: Photo by poloroid-girl via LAist Featured Photos on Flickr. The great philosopher Kermit the Frog once said, "It's not that easy being green." Maybe he was on to something. You…
I had the opportunity to see Felicity Barringer, the New York Times correspondent, speak on the "The Dangers of Environmental Parables" at University of Wyoming's Consumer Issues Conference. Barringer argued that simple parables, such as the greed-versus-good stories present in the seminal Silent…

"While riding a bike saves energy and is a great exercise, it gives you less time to do other things, like sports or homework," she writes.

Except that in many cities, traffic being what it is, bikes get you to your destination as fast or faster than cars (and without the need to search for parking!).

And I'm sure the "more time for homework" angle will play well with the kids.

I just like the fact that her last name is Fretwell.
That is all.

Ah yes, I miss my subscription to the Journal. I was particularly thrilled with their editorial a few years ago saying that, because Saddam Hussein is probably hiding biological weapons in populated regions, we should have no moral compunctions about bombing civilian areas. Now, alas, with Rupert Murdoch purchasing the paper it will descend to the liberal rantings of Fox News and The New York Post. Oh, the humanity!

I like how riding a bike would take away from time for sports. I wonder what Lance Armstrong would say about that.

I wonder if the book takes time to point out how much we can learn about ourselves by listening to and thinking about the environmental questions our kids ask. Isn't the hybrid vehicle question an excellent opportunity to ask yourself and your kid about what the environment is worth to each of you? Why not teach your kid about making sacrifices and giving other things up (e.g., cable TV or brand name clothes) so that you can better afford the $3000 or more to pay for the hybrid?

Getting children to become the eco-police is easy. Getting them to stick with it more than a few months, nearing impossible. Their attention span can be short.

Where education is concerned, the objective of parents appears to be raising children who act and think just like themselves. This is why there are so many religious schools - they cater to parents who want to be sure their children are not exposed to ideas that could make them think differently.

Considering the appallingly high obesity rate in the US - and the UK's attempts to catch up - I think the cycling advisable for reasons of health as much as environment. It isn't a suitable means of transport for all journeys, but why is the car considered the default choice even for the ten-minute trip down the road? I cycle to work and back each weekday - it keeps me a bit fitter than I would be otherwise, and saves a lot of money.

Surely you guys are not being honest. Just because the article is blatantly wrong does not give you license to go whole hog on every statement. It's pretty clear to anyone who stops to think about it for a second that switching to bike transportation in the extreme can discourage other exercise choices. Personally, I think if riding a bike is impinging upon your other sports activities, you're not really in danger of becoming the McDonald's kid, so you should be allowed to choose either guilt free.
