Society for Research at Undergraduate Institutes (ANACAPA)

The Anacapa Society is a professional organization promoting research in all areas of theoretical and computational physics at primarily undergraduate institutions.

If you are at such an institution, I would recommend taking a look and perhaps joining. In my views, undergraduate research is one of the best things about an undergraduate institution. What better way to learn physics than by doing physics. My institution is primarily undergraduate and I can say that although working with undergraduates has it's challenges, it has benefits also. I think it is the thing that smaller schools can offer students.

At large research I type universities, the focus is on research primarily with graduate students. At smaller schools that don't have grad students, many of the roles are filled by undergrads. This gives them opportunities to not only conduct research but also give presentations and perhaps even publish. Its really difficult to teach that kind of stuff in a class.

The economy might be scary, but I've seen ads for academic jobs already. And for geoscience grad students, the first conference is only a little more than a month away. So I'm going to revise and repost a series that I wrote on my old blog, about getting a job at a predominantly undergrad…
Sean Carroll is offering more unsolicted advice (though it is in response to a comment, which makes it borderline solicited...), this time about choosing an undergraduate school. He breaks the options down into four categories, with two small errors that I'll correct in copying the list over here…
I've had a few conversations with other small-college folks about how there ought to be some sort of group within DAMOP for people at small colleges, given how many of us there are who do AMO physics. Nothing has ever come of it, because nobody wants to take on the administrative hassle of…
Over at io9, they have a post on the finances of running a research lab at a major university. It's reasonably good as such things go, but very specific to the top level of research universities. As I am not at such an institution, I thought it might be worthwhile to post something about the…
