I read blogs and news via their site feeds using Bloglines (a web based newsreader). This has gone without a hitch for the year or so I've been using the service, but I have been thinking of switching to program that actually runs on my computer. Today, Bloglines stopped updating my feeds, inspiring me to search for an alternative newsreader. I downloaded a couple of free programs (Awasu and Vox Lite), but neither of them seem to be able to handle Atom feeds (which means that I can't read many Blogspot blogs). Does anyone know of a free newsreader that can handle Atom?

Strangly enough, I read this entry through BlogLines, which seems to be working for me. Maybe they had a momentary glitch?
Anyway, Wikipedia has a list of News Aggregators so you could try looking there.
Omea?
I use Liferea on Linux.
I'm using GreatNews:

Freeware.
I use feedreader:
www.feedreader.com
It is also free.
If you use Firefox, Sage (http://sage.mozdev.org/) is very good.
I'm an avid user of Google Reader, and of Google Romance. Google is very, very bullish on Atom, so you shouldn't have any problem with those feeds.
Which version of Awasu did you test? It's had support for Atom 0.3 for ages which is what Blogspot uses and the latest alpha handles Atom 1.0.
I was using the version of Awasu that I downloaded from here.
RSS Bandit (www.rssbandit.org) has worked very well for me. Outlook type format and easy to customize.
I just started using SharpReader. It's super. Handles ATOM feeds fine. No cost.

i read a few using the built-in newsreader in Mozilla's Thunderbird, which is useful as its my pop/imap/smtp client as well.
download.com listings are often out-of-date.
The latest general release is always here: http://awasu.com/latest/.
Are you using a PC or a Mac? The best RSS reader is NetNewsWire for Mac only. Feedburner suggests FeedDemon for the PC.
I should have clarified that I'm on a Windows machine.
I use Onfolio, recently purchased by Microsoft and folded into their Windows Live Toolbar as a module. It works very nicely not only for news reading, but also for creating and maintaining collections of notes, documents, projects, etc. See http://www.onfolio.com
