Well, I'm just back from the 3rd Queensland Biohumanities Conference, convened by Paul Griffiths, which was titled "Idealization, mechanism and reduction: New Directions in the Philosophy of Proximal Biology". Speakers were Bill Bechtel (UC San Diego), Alex Rosenberg (Duke), Marcel Weber (Basel),…
When one is starting in a field for the first time, the choice of textbook is crucial, as it will often set the tone for the rest of one's study. Last year and the year before I helped teach Philosophy of the Life Sciences here, and we used, respectively, one textbook and no textbook. Right now I'…
One of the enduring mistakes made in science and philosophy is to confuse how things seem with how they are. In biology, the conjunction "pattern and process" has been around for decades, at least since 1947 in ecology, when Alex Watt used it as a title for an essay on plant communities. In 1967,…
John Wilkins is in Arizona attending a Philosophy of Biology conference (another one of those "I wish I could be there" things) and liveblogging the whole thing: When philosophers really embarrass themselves Liveblogging the conference: Mishler Liveblogging the conference: Piotrowski Liveblogging…

Honestly, I can't recall what Cooper said. I was too busy stressing over whether the equipment was working. As the nearest thing to tech support in the project, I was the recordist for the conference...
