PZombie meetup at University of Queensland

OK, so it seems there are several readers of PZ Maggle who live in or around Brisbane. Some are even on or near the UQ St Lucia campus. So we should meet and pay homage to the Great Tentacled One. Leave suggested times and places in the comments. So far the best suggestion is Genie's Cafe in the IMB building.

I keep getting asked: why should I participate in blog carnivals? The Wikipedia page about blog carnivals is not really accurate (it includes things that are not carnivals), and also suffers from overzealous, obsessive-compulsive, self-important administrators (who have probably never seen a…
A number of readers have asked about Minnow's daycare situation and how she adjusted to it. Fish and I spent a lot of time debating daycare options before we settled on our current center. There are 4 basic choices in childcare: a daycare center, a licensed home daycare, an unlicensed stay-at-home…

Of course EvoThunkers are also welcome. We can debate whether a Great Ape could take out a Squid, and whether we can get financing from a Japanese film company to test this.

How about an evening at the staff club or Red Room, so us dark-siders and other non-UQ people can make it easily?

Yep, I actually have UQ Staff Club membership (and hence feel a duty to increase patronage plus they have Coopers on tap). I vote for the Staff Club (but am flexible).

Staff Club sounds good. I've never been there before, I'm a detested undergrad. What day/time is good for everyone? I'm free whenever, though exams are soon so I'd prefer sooner rather than later.

The UQ campus is the UQ campus (I'm in Holland Park), so the specifics of place aren't a problem for me.

I'm more concerned by time. Or even time of week. My weekends are shot to hell by my partner (and she's getting to the roll-her-eyes stage when I talk about the latest-by-PZ).

I'm also... erm... between research projects at the moment. So I'm kind-of-flexible at the moment, but I really do need to plan ahead. When-ish were people thinking? Fer how long?

I live within walking distance of campus, so any time outside of business hours is easy for me (with a little warning).

Anywhere is fine by me as long as you can produce some sort of mud map to where on campus it is. It's been years since I've been at UQ and I really wouldn't have the foggiest. Nights are best as I could land the kids on the hubby and drive in from Ipswich.

PS For all you bemoaning the fact you went to QUT- it could me worse, I'm a ,da da da dum....JCU graduate! What can I say? Back in my day you had to have a TE score of about a million to get into the "intelligent uni" and, quite frankly, I just screwed around in high school and never did enough work.

Hell, the band I live with are playing the Red Room next Friday. Only the bassist reads Pharyngula; the lead guitarist and drummer never learnt to read anything more than favourable reviews and drink menus, unfortunately.

Since I live on the north side, no time and place are convenient for me. Teaches me to move to a city I've never visited.

Usually on a Friday there's a philosophy seminar series I have to attend, as I organise them. However, for the next two weeks there are none, so I can attend. Why don't we meet around 5.30 at the Staff Club next Friday? There's an outdoor section we usually sit at where we can talk without shouting.

If that's Friday the 29th, I'm in- as long as you don't mind the fact I'll have to come straight from court and'll look all formal and lawyerly ( I'll leave the wig in the car).

Well if we're doing fancy dress, I guess I can come dressed as an extremely unimaginative person or something...

Aaah, I meant Friday the 30th. Ok I'm a dick when it comes to dates.

I'd wear my newly purchased Richard Dawkins.net T-shirt with the big red A on the front but alas, it hasn't arrived yet. I'm sure we'll be able to all recognise each other though. The godlessness positively radiates off us.

Ha. Friday, 30 May, 5:30, UQ Staff Club.

Righto, my partner who's sick of me repeating Pharyngula stories at her will be at her other job that evening, so it should be pretty good.

... erm, don't we have to show a staff or student card to get in?

The closest to any Atheist clothing I might have is the bright red bandana given to me with my membership in QUT's Pastafarian Society. Bit odd, walking into the Staff Club with a bandana on, but...

Bride: can we get a squid to dance on the tables for photo goodness? That'd show them Bostonians. :-)

Works for me!

Where are all the Melburnian readers of Pharyngula or the RD.net? Russell, I think you should organize something. We can't stand for banana benders out doing us. I would organize it, but I'm an ideas kind of person. I'll leave the details to underlings.....

And who is thinking of the Melbournian pharyngulites? And bummer, would have loved to say Hi to lawyerwoman and to John of course ! Brian and Russell,we should come up with something as well !

Cheers,
Martin

Brian and I did manage to meet up once, though that was more a Dawkins.net get-together - as Brian alluded to - than a scienceblogs or pharyngula one.

I'm always prepared to have a drink with almost anyone, though I'm usually too lazy to organise it.

OK, so it looks like next Friday, the 30th at 5.30 pm at the UQ Staff Club. I'll be the tired looking fat guy.

I'll only be able to make a flying visit - Friday nights are busy for me.
