If you are like me, you are looking forward to the May 27 Champions League showdown between Man United and Barcelona. No doubt, many here in DC will be taking a break from work to head to a nearby pub or to watch from the office. Even Obama seems to be a soccer fan. In an appearance on Univision last week, he spoke about his hopes for securing the US as a host for a future World Cup and the growth of the game in the States.
More like this
Just finished watching the Brazil/Croatia game. Certainly the first half was the best half of football in the competition so far - topped with a nice goal by Kaka. Second half wasn't as good - though still better than the France/Switzerland game - the Brazilians looked a little tired.
Around the world, productivity of businesses, service, all things related to the progress of civilization, and pretty much everything else will be delayed and repeatedly interrupted from today on through some time in July as the quadrennial event known as World Cup Soccer is played out.
Last week, Workers' Memorial Week events and reports from around the country drew media attention.
Pardon?
The United States DID host the World Cup in recent years.
Has he never heard of USA 94? Thats only 4 tournaments back.
The birthplace of football (or soccer as you call it), England, hasn't hosted a World Cup for over forty years and many other countries that where the game is taken seriously have never hosted the event. I have no problem with the USA as a hostUSA as a host (they did a good job in 94) but its ironic to suggest that having the US as a host will help promote the game when it doing just that clearly didn't leave much of a memory for a 'fan' like Obama.
