My friend Reihan Salam, the svengali behind The American Scene, is on blogginghead.tv talking about the primary races. Reihan often has a high signal to noise ratio in large part because of his low analysis to data ratio.1 He's chatting with Chris Hayes, who wrote up a really interesting piece on…
A friend pointed out to me that the regular brown guys on bloggingheads.tv (Reihan Salam, and to a far lesser extent Ramesh Ponnuru and myself)
1) have names that start with "R"
2) lean Right
My piece, Why the gods will not be defeated, has generated some response on the internet. Reihan Salam & Ross Douthat both have some thoughts, while fellow ScienceBlogger Jonah Leher offered some kind words. Also, just an FYI, I've been asked to turn the post into an extended essay elsewhere…
About five minutes into my class Wednesday, my cell phone rang. I silenced it right away, but recognized the number as the kids' day care. And I knew right away what it was: The Pip has had a bit of a cough for a while, and wasn't all that happy that morning. Sure enough, when I got back to my…
Soon I will profile you!
Haven't read that Grand New Party book, just the reviews. Apparently they claim that the best way forward for the GOP is to become... a European social-democratic party??
A lot of their suggestions are already implemented in France and the UK, some with more success than others (the negative tax for low wage workers sounds good in theory, but in practice it's a mess and doesn't really create an incentive).
In general, their whole pro-society, families-before-business outlook seems unmistakably social-democratic in nature.
Of course, since the co-author seems to read this blog, he can probably give a better description of what the book is really about?...
a European social-democratic party??
*christian*-democratic :=) social market, not social democratic.
Loved the profile, which (among other things) reminded me of the time I viewed Reihan's YouTube interpretation of the Smiths' "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side." Interesting...
P.S. I noted that the writing style in the profile seemed distinctly different than your usual GNXP posts. I'm curious as to whether you got majorly edited, or just changed your style to fit the venue. (I have to confess I have a secret fondness for the various Razib-isms that pepper your regular posts.)
