Socks is gone

I mentioned a few months ago that Socks was in end stage cancer. It ended today. R.I.P. Socks.

Here's a guest entry from Charm Quark, one of the bloggers at Skepchick Sweden. When I read it there I asked her to give me a translation for Aard. I have alopecia, an autoimmune disease in which hair follicles go into a resting phase, causing hair loss. The form I've got, alopecia areata, causes…
Here's a charming story: A math professor at Michigan State University allegedly stripped naked, ran naked through his classroom and screamed “There is no f*cking God!” before police apprehended him, according to several reports. The professor's name has not yet been released, but online, students…
About two and a half weeks ago, I was disappointed to learn that Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski had somehow managed to delay justice again. At the time, I didn't know what had happened other than that his hearing before the Texas Medical Board, which had been scheduled to begin on April 11 and to which I…

That's sweet you to post this. Who doesn't remember Socks? He will be missed.

That's a pretty long life for a cat. I hope it was a good one.

I have all of my Socks Memorabilia, which I will say a prayer over today in memory of Socks, and for his safe arrival to the Other Side.

Cat astrophe.

I wonder if anyone has tried to figure out changes in life expectancy for pet cats and dogs over the last 100 years, or longer. Odysseus' dog lived 20+ years; our two golden retrievers died in the early 80s aged 10 and 12. And with that, I am out of data.

In general larger species live longer than smaller ones, with a lot of exceptions. Horses are smaller than cows by a bit, but live longer by about ten years.

But larger members of a given species tend to die younger. At least among domesticated animals. The largest breeds of dogs may last ten years. Smaller breeds can last fifteen to twenty.

20 years is long for any dog or cat.

Humans live a long long time, especially for our body size compared to other mammals. You have to get up to elephants before any others come close.

Kind of getting off track, I guess. Hope Socks had a good one.

I always kept up with Socks and was in his fan club. Really liked him. May God bless his soul and may he rest in peace.
