Yes, I too was asked by EA games to install and test Spore. That is their hot new product.
I have run into certain hurdles. This is the best I could do for spores:
Spore only runs on a Windows computer. Well, I have one of those not for any really good reason, as it turns out ... to run games. (Mainly Julia's games.)
The hard drive is small and the processor is small, but I was able to download spore and convince it to install on an external hard drive that had plenty o' room.
Then when I tried to run it, I was informed that the graphics card is not up to snuff. That does not surprise me given the hardware I'm using for Windows.
So, for me, Spore is out of the question. When a Linux version is launched, I will be happy to try it. I don't think EA has a Linux version of anything. Shame.
Well, I tried. But my computer got voted off the island.

Will it run under Wine? Incidentally, there is also a Mac version.
I tried to install it, but it insisted on using Finnish (I live in Finland, but barely comprehend the language). Once I installed it, it wouldn't run, because some dll was missing. It seems to need a particular version of DirectX, which I probably don't have. At that point, I decided to give up.
I'm rather biased, but I prefer this spore.
If they had a Linux version, I would be mildly afeared of a half-baked .configuration file somewhere :)
I feel not quite up to getting back into Linux until all my children are in school, because it takes not an insignificant time to do the fun things with it. I ran and enjoyed Fedora Core a while back, but I gotta say, the whole fiasco where one of the builds of gcc broke one major piece of compatibility with others of the same minor version, and the driver rebuild that gave me a nearly unrecoverable num/scroll/caps blink on startup... I'm no slouch, but I ran into troubles :)
It was invaluable when I was trying to make one of my cool foundational libraries at work be cross-platform-ready. I also played Neverwinter Nights like there was no tomorrow - that ran pretty well :)
Ah, drifting off-topic...
My wife has Spore on pre-order. She's quite taken with the concept, and has just been going nuts waiting for it.
By the way, I notice that it's your birthday today, Greg. Happy Birthday :)
Rhynie Chert!!!! God, I love that stuff.
I tried to install it, and even with the new release of Wine, and a complete download and install of activeX and associated dll's, ran into a message that the system couldn't connect to the Registration Server. Kind of frustrating after a few hours of working on it.
Phun works great, though.
You lucky bastard.
I ran into the same problem as Mike. I tried installing it through Wine and ended up with several error messages before it reset my monitor's screen resolution. The game, or at least the creator aspect of it, looked interesting, but not nearly interesting enough to go through that much trouble.
