In Memorium

Let us not let the death of Ed McMahon and some other stars overshadow the anniversary of the death of one of the greats. In memoriam, let's talk bullshit:

More like this

This week in NYC, at #140 conf, I was most impressed by the talks and panels about education, and the use of online technologies, Web, and particularly social networks like Twitter in the classroom. You know I am interested in this - just search my blog for names like "David Warlick" and "Stacy…
Cuddly Cub Polar Bear Knut has died unexpectedly, at the age of four. The cause of death is unknown but speculation abounds. In memoriam, please remain silent for a moment while we play the Knut Song: Here is the last video of him, showing his death. This is a bit gruesome. Perhaps, if you know…
If you were curious why Farah Fawcett and Bea Arthur and Ed McMahon were omitted from the In Memoriam section of the Oscars show, apparently Hollywood has discovered Wikipedia's notability requirement: "I would not say that it was an oversight," Leslie Unger, spokeswoman for the Academy of Motion…
Miscellaneous sports-related items (mostly soccer talk, because other than the World Cup, there are no sports going on now worth watching): Before getting to soccer, some really important sports news: Williams College won its tenth Sears Cup in the last eleven years, as the best athletic program…

We seem to have lost a lot of names this past year. Carlin perhaps one of those to be missed most - up to the very end he never missed a line, muffed a cutting social observation, or even slowed down much. And Farah was my introduction to Los Angeles - she and the original SNL were coincident to my arrival here.

But there have been some personal losses also. I mentioned my dog-cat Madison in my last comment on Cats or Dogs. For the past 9 months we have been fighting a toxic kidney failure. Last week he was diagnosed with cancer of the intestinal lymph nodes. He had lost so much substance, robustness, and even self, there was no way he could survive any extreme measures, so on Friday we had the vet visit us and we together put him to sleep. The way he relaxed into the first soporific injection was a clear thankyou.

Why dog-cat? He was 22 lbs, length went across my hips and down to my knee, walked over (no need to jump) pretty much any other cat, and was bigger than many dogs I know. Weight was skeletal size, not fat. He also suffered from separation anxiety when I left home for any length of time, only purred when I was home, and would gaze into my eyes with dog-like devotion for hours at a time. Not your normal cat.

15 years my constant companion. RIP Madison.

Gray: Sorry to hear about your ... "cat" ... (are you sure it was a cat?)

Thanks, Greg. Had a couple days to mourn now. And update his blog, not that I ever did much with it, but sometimes that is what happens.

If interested, see here (http://blog.merklecat.net/) his recent history and healthy pics. Yes, he's a cat, but with some Panther.
