Remember the excitement when ER was first aired? In those days, a prime time hospital show was a fresh, new, wonderful idea and we all loved it. Then, St. Elsewhere, and that was OK. Then a lot more followed, and the market became saturated and annoying.
But now, there's something new. Not more of the same at all. In fact, rather less of the same. Check it out:

I see your "ER" and a "St.Elsewhere" and raise you a "Markus Welby MD" in black and white. Of course to see it you had to jiggle the rabbit ears a bit. My memory is fuzzy, or is that just the snow that partially obscured the picture.
Of course, this time in 'living color', there was a subset of medical shows, the EMT show. The first being "Emergency!".

i think they should remake a whole new series of ER shows:
ER: Des Moines --PTO disasters!
ER: Paris --runway model sprained ankles!
ER: McMurdo Station -- frost bite and morphing dogs!
Ah yes, Emergency! Still to this day the most realistic emergency medicine show ever made.

The truck: Real, while built for the show it was later donated and used by working paramedics.

OK, let's jump to the movies. What was the most realistic portrayal of an ER procedure in a movie that was not about medicine? I vote for the scene in Bullitt when the man the police were guarding was being treated for gunshot wounds at the hospital. The matter-of-fact behavior of the doctors and nurses was strikingly different from most movie ER scenes. I remarked on it when we were watching recently, and then I watched the short promotional movie that accompanies the disc. On that I found that Steve McQueen wanted authenticity, so they shot the scenes in an real hospital and used the real staff instead of actors.
Yes, but we already have real life, what do we want realistic life like drama for in the movie we pay to see?
