Go Asha!

This blog does more than sit there ... blogging. Sometimes it reaches out and does something real. And this year, GLB sponsored (in part) a runner in the Grandma's Marathon, in Duluth, MN.

Asha Shoffner ran the half marathon with a time of 1:48:14. This is Asha's Blog. The producers, writers, and staff of Greg Laden's blog are very proud to have had this opportunity.

For this week's ScienceBlogger interview, we present the star of Greg Laden's Blog: none other than the great Greg Laden. (The girl on his shoulders is his daughter, Julia.) What's your name? Greg Laden What do you do when you're not blogging? Not blogging? Oh, that. I am a part time biological…

Laelaps was a dog in Greek mythology that always caught its prey and was turned into stone (by Zeus himself!) while hunting the Teumessian fox that could never be caught. Lealaps is also a defunct name for a carnivorous dinosaur. Laelaps is also a mite that parasitizes rats. And Laelaps is the…

A half mile in a time of 1m 48s would be a world record for a woman, at least at the sort-of equivalent metric distance of 800m. And there's that whole trailing :14 not accounted for. So I'm going to assume this is a "half marathon," rather than a half mile, with the stated time in hours/minutes/seconds. Which is certainly respectable, and better than I could do, but not mind-bogglingly fast.

I didn't mean for my earlier comment to sound as snarky as it did; apologies for that. I wasn't trying to belittle Asha's accomplishment. I was just curious because of the earlier error (now corrected) that the time was for a half mile, rather than for a half marathon.

In any event, yes, congratulations! :-)
