Nobody cares that Julia Gillard is an atheist

According to a Social Analysis who has studied the issue. Gillard is the new Prime Minister of Oz.

In a Canberra Times report, David Chalke said: "No more than they are fussed about her not being married and living with a hairdresser. That's the way the world is."

"In fact, Julia Gillard is more typical of modern Australia than are the religious-married-with-kids previous prime minister and Opposition Leader. They are actually in the minority now. Households with parents married to each other with children is less than about 20 percent of households now."

Ms Gillard has spoken about being raised a Christian, but leaving it behind as an adult - which is in stark contrast to her predecessor Kevin Rudd and opponent Tony Abbott, the report said.

As it should be.

But, wait... Social analysis? WTF is that?

Australia used to be, for the period of my youth, a secular society. Sure, everyone made the CoE noises, except for the few non-Christians (mostly Jews) who found their way into public office, but basically, the place of religion was defined by the nasty role of Catholic "intellectuals" who tried…
Julia Gillard, the new Prime Minister of Australia, is unmarried…but she has a boyfriend, a partner, a…a…paramour, which brings up the horrific possibility of a leader of the country living in sin in official accommodations. Oh, lord, I'm getting the vapors just thinking about it. And now the…
In yet another attempt to Catholicise the Australian options on health, Minister Tony Abbott, a Catholic, continues his reckless quest by assigning to the Catholic Church in Australia a contract to provide pregnancy counselling services. This is in part because he wants to reduce the number of…
It takes real effort to purge yourself of parasites, and Australia's got 'em: rabbits, cane toads, and now…chaplains. That's the way it is here in Germany, too. I don't believe anyone would even think to ask if Angie is religious or not, because everyone* here understands that religion has nothing to do with how you run a country.

*There are, of course, exceptions.

What about the fact that she doesn't support marriage for same sex couples? Do we care about that?

Seems to me that an atheist Australian PM is much more of an issue in America than it is in Australia. Even the staunchly Catholic Leader of the Opposition doesn't care.

I noticed that she made an affirmation at her swearing in ceremony, but I suspect that many Australians didn't find out until they read it on Pharyngula.

If this issue was a parrot we could do a Monty Python joke.

What about the fact that she doesn't support marriage for same sex couples? Do we care about that?

Maybe we can do social justice for Teh Ghey after one or two more pressing matters?

She doesn't? That would make her an asshole.

That might be fine, if it were in the queue. It's not.

Yeah, the situation here in Germany is weird. A politician doesn't need to be religious - at least nobody asks - but they do have to pander to religion or at least adopt an accomodationist stance.

Well, I am not sure whether they have to be all careful about religion to garner sympathy, but they definitely are.
