That's the way it is here in Germany, too. I don't believe anyone would even think to ask if Angie is religious or not, because everyone* here understands that religion has nothing to do with how you run a country.
*There are, of course, exceptions.

Seems to me that an atheist Australian PM is much more of an issue in America than it is in Australia. Even the staunchly Catholic Leader of the Opposition doesn't care.
I noticed that she made an affirmation at her swearing in ceremony, but I suspect that many Australians didn't find out until they read it on Pharyngula.

Yeah, the situation here in Germany is weird. A politician doesn't need to be religious - at least nobody asks - but they do have to pander to religion or at least adopt an accomodationist stance.
Well, I am not sure whether they have to be all careful about religion to garner sympathy, but they definitely are.
