Know Your Place

I have been sitting on this particular entry for so long that I almost forgot that it was languishing in my "unpublished" category. But due to the shenanigans today, I thought I would be different by publishing something that is true. Annoying? Yes (depending upon who you are), but true, nonetheless.

In my web wanderings, I ran across EgoSurf, a nifty site that uses mysterious criteria to rank the importance of blogs (my hypothesis? They rely on pecking pigeons to determine their rankings, just as Google does. Because I love birds, this would explain my own site's results). I subjected the most obvious choice to this search process and discovered PZ's score.

I then wondered how PZ's score stacked up against the big boys, and discovered that he did quite well when compared to them, as follows;

Then, curiosity got the best of me, and I simply had to learn my own site ranking. I made a startling discovery ..

Don't believe me? Just click on each certificate to repeat the EgoSurf.

More like this

When I ran your's it was well over 10000, and Boing Boing was about 960. I think it's a bit confused.

Hah! Mine was 8181! And it means only that I spend way too much friggin' time commenting on other blogs. It has nothing to do with the number of visits my own blog gets. Since I use the same alias and web address for all my comments, the egosurf engine returned a lot of hits.

Still, my ego needed massaging.

Well I got 7164, and 693 came from the comments I post in this blog. So here goes another boost to my ego. I need to post here more often.

The algorithm for measuring ego seems to give a lot of points for listing your blog in lots of blog directories, and a lot less for real links.

Just to make some sense of this (no offense intended, but glenn reynolds and instapundit get something la 15M hits when searched in google, and grrlscientist gets 35K!)

It somehow takes into account the results that come up on a google search of your name, and weights them according to whether they point to your site. So, you kind of stacked the deck against reynolds, because not many people link to him under that name, and if you search for glenn reynolds in google, it points to other sites as well --- even if most of those are the same old glenn. And it will favor recent blogs, because the domain is unique - you are not splitting google hits across, for instance, instapundit.com and instapundit.blogspot.com.

Disclaimer: I never read Instapundit, and do read your blog...

alllllright, maria .. do you hear that obnoxious noise that sounds like farts? that's the sound of my deflating ego as it whizzes around the room like a balloon after a pinprick has destroyed its structural integrity.

and i am glad to know that you are here, reading (and hopefully enjoying), instead of an instapundit reader dropping in to torture me!

Maria, that would not explain PZ Myers score. The likely reason is that he doesn't rank as high in the cephalopod loving community as Hedwig does in the bird lovers community.

Mine is all over the place. It was 9000+ the first time I tried EgoSurf. In between it bottomed out to zero. Now it's 2000+. Seems pretty meaningless. I did find your blog through it though. :)
