A Gift from Another Reader

I am amazed and humbled by you, my readers. You have made me feel so appreciated by sending me emails as well as the most wonderful gifts. Recently, one reader sent the entire set of the Lord of the Rings DVDs! I am excited because I have not seen all of the films yet, although I have read the books quite a few times (and I still have my original set of LOTR books from when I was a kid). This particular reader decided I needed the platinum series special extended edition instead of the basic starter series I asked for so I am still watching them -- there's hours of video to be seen on each DVD, and I am enjoying every minute!

This nerd thing going on is really bugging me. I went back and re-did the test, changing only 2 or 3 answers to what I did before (not lying, just taking the other one of two possibly correct answers) and got a much higher score: I agree with Jim that the quiz is not really measuring nerdiness so…
Janet, Janet, Janet. What have you wrought? I know you're hosting the Skeptics' Circle next week, which gives you much cred in my book, but why this now? Annoyed at being shut out of the hottest scienceblogger list, you decreed a nerd-off, and then everybody had to get into the act, including Nick…
On Tor.com over the last couple of years, Kate Nepveu has been taking us through a chapter-by-chapter re-read of The Lord of the Rings. In each post she would give a brief summary of the action as well as some commentary. It's been a great project and it's just come to an end in the last week or…
Image: Philadelphia City Paper You only have one week left before Christmas eve arrives, so I assume that you might be getting ready to panic and spend your hard-earned money on just anything, so you can say you gave your loved ones gifts. So I thought I'd help you spend your money wisely by…

And don't forget the three easter eggs on the three videos. I think the second one (of gollum accepting the MTV award) is the very best!

In the image you included, there is a line of what looks like Elvish of some sort at the bottom. But I know a little of the script, and it looked wrong. Sure enough, on closer inspection, it turned out to be "faux Elvish". It's English, with letters distorted to look vaguely Elvish. If you look, you can see that it says one ring to rule them all one ring to find them. Where did the image come from?

wow, are you looking at that image with a magnifying glass?

that image came from an old movie ad or poster that i dug up on the web. i chose it for the font at the bottom.

you must have some mighty fine friends there Hedwig! Good for you!!
