This is Memorial Day weekend in America, a time when we supposedly remember all of America's war dead. NYC celebrates Memorial Weekend by embedding it firmly in the middle of its annual "Fleet Week." So during this week, NYC is crawling with military people, mainly Navy and Marines. Basically, NYC is a huge celebration of hedonism, filled with drinking games, push-ups, scantily-clad women and hot, steamy sex. And I am sitting in the middle of all this chaos, using the free wifi connection at my watering hole.
So tell me what you are doing, dear readers.

There are so many reasons to love NYC, and surely, the best reason is the street fairs that occur all over Manhattan during the summer. Street fair "season" in NYC runs between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.…
A quick Olympic question: How would a native of China pronounce the j in Beijing? All the commentators pronounce it like the J in the French je suis, but I've heard that in China the pronunciation would be closer to the J in jingle. I have no idea if this is true, and I'm not at the university…
That implicit consent thread has just broken a thousand comments, so I'm closing it and inviting everyone to move here.
Just to keep it interesting, I found (via Jen) a couple of lists. The one on the left is from one of those liberal progressive sites, and clarifies the whole issue of male…
Have you ever been walking through the forest and thought to yourself, "Damn, its loud here...it's really, really hard to hear anything anybody else is saying"? Well, maybe that's what prompted Terry J. Ord and Judy A. Stamps, respectively from Harvard and UC Davis to investigate lizard exercise…
I spent the day at the ER....
So far, a lot of walking and birding.
Mowed the lawn.
No drinking or push-ups, but better... I went to a rabbit show then worked on an outdoor aviary.
Listened to Test Match Special in Saturday. Followed the rain falling at Headingley on Sunday, back to work today.
What is this "Memorial Day" of which you speak? :-)
Bob
At work :o(
Seething jealously.
I spent a few hours this weekend reading my first Harry Potter book after months of persuasion by GrrlScientist. What a delight it was. Thanks, G/S.
wow, the ER?? what happened?
And Eve; an outdoor aviary! i think that is an especially fine thing to do on memorial day -- it's better than all the rampant hedonism in NYC (and forgetfulness .. honestly, can anyone remember any war veterans after drinking 27 bottles of beer in one night?)
I spent most of my weekend sitting around resting after a busy time at work.
Speaking of outdoor aviaries, grrlscientist have you been to the one at the Queens Zoo in Flushing? Its a little boring in summer but a very cool trip in winter in nyc.
Camped at Big Sur with friends and hiked in the redwoods, plus looked for salamanders and lizards, of course...
Saturday I was creatively swearing at the computer mysteriously panicking--finally determined some memory keeps going pear-shaped every few hours--so Sunday, whilst also monitoring the rain at Headingley (the internet's good for something!), searched for a decent deal on replacement memory. Monday, resumed searching for a job, and continued deciphering the mysteries of Python (a computer programming language named after the Monty Python group). It's been cold and windy and a bit wet in this part of France...
Memorial day? A holiday? What's that? ;-)
